VA Border to SC Border via the Beach
I heard that it is possible to drive most of the outer banks on the beach in the winter. Me and some friends are thinking about doing this trip sometime in January. Has anyone out there done this before? We would probably go Friday night and stay at the VA border and then drive the beach on Saturday. It supposedly takes like 6 hrs total.

You cannot drive from the VA border to the SC on the beach - legally anyway. Plus there are many islands in that stretch that require the use of paved bridges or Ferrys.
You can drive to the VA border on the beach via the 4x4 beach access at the end of Highway 12 just north of Corolla. Without stopping this stretch takes less than 30 minutes.
You cannot even drive the entire OBX on the beach. The 3 islands are broken up into sections that allow beach access but there are many protected areas where you can't get your vehicle on the beach.

That is what I was thinking. There are some parts where you would have to use the road and some for ferry, so I guess going from border to border on the beach as much as possible and include Oracoke. The national park website shows a bunch of spots closed for summer. CHeck out the beach access map.

Ocracoke is the best part of OBX IMO.

Ocracoke has the softest sand of the OBX too, but access 72 on Ocracoke is fun!

Agreed, very sweet.
And if you're into little to no crowds, Ocracoke is like Manhattan compared to Portsmouth. The fishing at Portsmouts is awesome too.
Just don't forget your bug spray.
