Large Oak Slabs in Central California
I have some Large Oak Slabs to sell. They were cut from a Valley Oak log in 1998 using an Alaskan Saw mill.
This was the butt cut of the tree so the slabs have a lot of characture but very few defects.
They were pegged and flipped every year for 5 years. I don't have a moisture meter so I don't know the exact moisture content. They have very little end checking. The bottom picture shows the ends.
They measure 1 1/2 thick (6/4) x 8' 7" long to 2 1/2" thick (10/4) x 8' 7" long. They average 30" - 32" wide.
$100 each for the 1 1/2 thick
$125 each for the 2 1/2 thick
Located east of Visalia, CA (Central California)
Great for bar tops or coffee tables.
The course spline Birfield is pictured for visual reference only. It does not come with the lumber.
Mudshipping may be you best bet. Shipping these 100lb/130lb slabs may be cost prohibitive.

I'm about an hour south and east of Fresno.
Find where hwy 189 hits the mountians and that is were I am.
Orangefj45 and a few others from the Stockton area may be coming to the Bakersfield rally next weekend. Maybe they could Mudship one back with them.

This tree was taken out by Cal Trans (California Department of Transportation) when they began widening Hwy 198. It was not cut for the fun of it. I propagated and planted 15 more oaks from its acorns on my property. With the thinning of the squirels, 8 are still living.

Valley Oak (Quercus lobata)
Species Name: Quercus lobata Nee Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Tracheophyta
Class: Angiosperm
Order: Fagales
Family: Fagaceae
Genus: Quercus
Species: Quercus lobata
Prior to European contact The Great Valley of California was full of life. It may have been one of the wildest places on earth. Rivers ran wild therefore heavy winter precipitation produced great floods in the valley supporting the life of many riparian areas. Preceding the mid 1800’s, riparian forests covered some 800,000 acres in the Great Central Valley of California. Of this great coverage, Valley oaks were a primary component of these forests. Valley Oak ( Quercus lobata) is the monarch of California oaks by virtue of its size, age and beauty (Pavlic et al. 1991). This magnificent tree is endemic to California and quite possibly is the largest North American oak, declaring it very unique. Descriptions of its remarkable stature appear in the diaries of many early visitors to California

I'd love to take one of the thicker ones if there is any reasonable way to get it to san diego. I'd pick it up in the LA area too.
thank you,
Jan

Is anybody from your area coming to the 7th annual Bakersfield Land Cruiser Rallie and swap meet this Saturday?

These will not leave until Wednesday, possibly Tuesday.
I completely forgot about the 3 day weekend and the effect it has on our shipping depart. The warehouse is slammed trying to get two business days work done in one day, last fridays orders and todays.
The rest of the slabs will be at the warehouse in the morning and the warehouse manager is going to try to work them in in between LTL orders.

I put a tape measure on the narrowest part of the thin boards.
Let me know if this throws off you plans.
The middle pic is the edge grain of Semlins three.
The bottom pic shows how straight they are, no or very little cupping.

thanks dan. the edge grain is so nice maybe i should make floor boards . actually, the close up flat grain figuring looks great too and it looks like they will sand out to over 1.25". on the long shots photos of the faces i am not a very good judge. are there many deep cracks or flaws there that will need serious filling? My main needs are a 6'x 5' "L", a 6'x3' L and a 3' length, all roughly 24" width and it doesn't matter which way i do the butt joints so i am hoping i can work around any nasty knots of flaws.

Maybe, maybe not. I sure hope so, but I haven't had the interview yet. Cross your fingers and say a prayer for me...
Besides, I was trying to be nice. Get it to Iowa, and I can get it to WV if I need to from there.
I'll take a 2.5" thick slab please....!
That would make a kick ass table or mantle... etc...

I'm going to Cuiser Moab with my tow rig and other rig on a trailer.
With my 39.5 irocs, I could get 4 maybe 5 under my rig on the trailer.

Semlin had bad luck with is three.
When they left our warehouse they were metal banded in two places and nylon banded in three additional places on an 8' x 4' pallet. They were then shrink wrapped, etc. Everything you could possible do to prevent damage.
The signs on the pallet, other than the shipping label were;
"Top Load Only"
"Do Not Break Shrink Wrap"
The freight company all but destroyed them. When he got them, they showed up without the shrink wrap and without a pallet with one loose band on the pile. They were also soaking wet. The top plank was destroyed.
I have asked him to post pictures here. Not for the chat purpose but more to show you what can happen during shipping. These will not easily fit in a trailer sideways do to the length. I can imagine a fork lift driver grabbing the end of the pallet and shoving them around or picking up one end and dropping them. It is a mystery to me what really happened. I hope to find out more when the pics come through and I am able to talk to the frieght company on monday.

what dan said
looks like everything that could go wrong did. i hope to have the photos soon of them on the remains of the pallet they arrived on, but i had to borrow a camera from the realtor next door. they were wet, warped and cracked. no sign of the shrink wrap. i am guessing somebody tried to pull them off the truck length wise with a fork lift and dropped them. here they are once i got them home.
