I have a press but nothing else normally used to remove the bearings. If you have the other items come on by we could try to get it done.

No, I won't have anything besides the carrier and the bearings. I think I am going to be able to use one in the maintenance shop at work. If not I will get back on here again. Cajun Offroad is the only place out of the ones I called that could do it but they said it would be 2 hrs of work at $70 per hour.

I haven't tore into it yet but I am pretty sure it is the differential bearings. The ones that sit under the bearing caps in the diff.

For the carrier bearings you will need a good press to make it easy. You can fight pulling them off with a puller but the press is easier. I think Paul misread it. If you can rent one of those bearing seperators it'll help with getting them off easier too.

Get you one of these from harbor freight

and like this with puller or press to remove. Use some oil around the race when you press them back on to make it go easier.

Web wrenching is easy and clean

Thanks guys. I will try to get it to a press next week. I have to drive it one more time how it is because my wife needs the car Monday. I hope it will be alright. Out of 3 vehicles, only the car is really drivable and she has to take it to the doctor.

Ok guys, I can't even get my bearing caps off without a vice. I'm SOL and it looks like I am going to have to take it to a shop to have them do it. Right now I'm pretty stressed about it because the 4Runner is my daily driver as well. On top of all of that, I not getting to go offshore right now so my money is drying up.

Does anyone have a shop with a vice that I could borrow this weekend?

ps am assuming you are just changing the carrier bearings and not the pinion bearings if changing all will need to set depth of pinion as well ya be doing the axle bearings/ seals?o-rings?

You should be able to put the 3rd on a bench and tap the bearing caps off. Make you a cheap holder out of some scrap 2x4's so it don't roll around on you. I won't be home this weekend but you can borrow my vice. Its loose right now just let me know.

As of right now I can't tell which bearing is giving me trouble. It only seems to make noise at 15mph + and without being able to get the bearing caps off, I can't isolate the cause. I will get a hold of one of you guys when I get some time. I appreciate the help.

I used the cheap rental bolt type compressors on the few I've done on the Taco's but they're dangerous and don't like them. If you took them off and brought them to a shop that had a better compressor you could save yourself a few dollars. Maybe Paul can fit you in if he has something

I swapped mine at Pepboys for something like $20 a pair, pull your old ones off and bring them along with the new ones.

Good info Brian and worth it not to fool with the cheap spring compressors.

Paul,

This article touches on what were talking about yesterday. The front 8inch high pinion 3rd out of an 80 will fit.

Toyota Axle Upgrade Guide - Brake Upgrades - 4 Wheel Drive & Sport Utility Magazine

The website I was telling you about.

I got another impact that took the bearing caps off with no problems. I am pretty sure that I have it narrowed down to the outer pinion bearing.

QUESTION: Is the outer pinion bearing (the one closest to the flange) supposed to float freely? It sits between the spacer and the seal but it doesn't have a race around it and it seems like it is useless.

I will get a hold of you "Doable". Sorry but I don't really know anyone's name. I just need to press out the pinion seal and maybe use a vise to set everything back up. My parts should be hear tomorrow afternoon.

I was able to change my outer pinion bearing and seal today. The noise has almost gone away but you can still hear it a little at higher speeds. I don't know what else it can be but its definitely getting better.

Its just me but when I'm in there I just assume change it all because I rather do it once. You can get a full install kit with all the bearings for a decent price. Glad to hear its getting better. Did you check your axle bearings to see if there was any play in them while you had it out?
