She's came out there on more than one occasion and threated to divorce me. I'm lucky I haven't had any problems with the neighbors of course at one time or another they borrowed tools or I've helped them with their mechanical situations that I guess they tolerate me.

I've read alot of the Bio's on rigs in Crawl mag that has spools and lincoln locked axles up front so it is used but I would guess these guys have ram assist steering or some kind of heavy duty steering assist. I will make a point to pay more attention to it.. I'll want something similar and most of all cheap in the trail rig TBB.

've been reading some lately about an Aussie up front. Most people who do it have beefed up front axles.

I have a rear aussie. I don't have any complaints. You do have to adjust your driving. For example, taking wider turns isn't a bad idea. I have driven more than 30 miles on the highway cruising at 55 mph without problem. During the break-in period (first 200 miles) you will hear some funky sounds coming from your rear diff, but that's normal. I had my mechanic install mine and he topped off the diff. oil with a little bit of posi-tract oil to help quiet things down.

Have fun. I though I would regret locking mine, but I would do it again!

To add to that, make sure you have good air pressure on you tires in non-aired down situations. I have a slow leaker and when pressue got low the sounds increase. Running 35 psi for the road they went away.

i apologized the next day when we were in the process of loading the trucks for scc.

your wife was cool about it .

i think she even said i really wasn't being that loud.

but she did mention that she was extremely happy to see josh's truck leave the front yard of the house.

Thanks, that is exactly what it was the spring came out of one the gears or something like that. I went and got a spare at Pull-A-Part ($3.00 wow) and put it back together like the spare one. Performed a test drive and it works fine now.

Just finished up. Anyone want to install some springs, give me a call. I think I'm an expert now. This looks right. I put the old back on but swapped them to the opposite side to see what would happen. Look pretty good.

About like that. The driver side one had more tilt to it away from the axle but it doesn't look like it wants to do that now. Hell if I know.

That sounds like a great combination! I am hoping to put an ARB on the front one day up the road.

You will like the rear aussie. It can get fun in the mud in 2WD.

You coming to Tellico either way? I will be there too. Sent my registration in last week.

since sept. you have had the first set of springs...

did you have any problems with the the shackle inverting on you?

or was that one time after instalation the only time.

from that last pic i think your shackle angle looks really good.

they are about where mine are in the rear with some settled 4 inch lift springs.

i will still send those anti inversion shackles your way if you think you need them.

you are becoming quite the LC mechanic.....

It inverted on me on the Cruiser trailer from Alabama (SCC). Other than that I think that is it.

The rear driver had more angle to it after the first install. When I flipped them today, they both had the same good angle that you see today. I showed Tom all the pics and he's going to go back over everything tomorrow and get back to me. He's also working on the "hop" issue I have right now on bumpy streets. I'm going to take more to send to him tomorrow.

Edit: Dan, I may still take them off your hands if you don't need them. I may try to break my spring swap record just for ****s and grins.

Also, the big cable running along the rear axle: Is that the e-brake cable? I see what looks like places to make adjustments there. Is that where I need to start to get my brakes tightened?

Yep, thats the E-brake and a good place to start adjusting.

I had a spring invert on me when I did my very first set of springs years ago....a few things worth noting:

1. My shackle bolt was way too tight (mostly this was it)

2. The distance between to points at opposite ends of an arc gets greater as the arc flattens. I.E, as she settles, they'll be a little further apart.

3. I think slightly longer shackles HELP

Listen to my rig and follow the smoke and noise back to the engine and look for the hole.

Also, I've heard many many many times that headers aren't "needed" in enhancing the performance on these old straight sixed in part b/c of the design of the old manifold.

Here is my question. I'm sure Mike knows but if anyone stumbled accross it I'd appreciate the insight. I've searched several times today with no direct answer. I'm wanting to know if you can remove the front driveshaft on the 95 - 97 FJ80's for commuting to events with no tranny issues? I know some have done it on their 80's and said how nice the 80 drove when all that revolving mass was removed from the picture. Dan had me thinking because he thought it was just on the early 91 - 92 models. I can see where it would be nice on the 12hr drive to Tennessee next month
