I asked Marty about that the other day and forgot. I wanted to see if he can touch base with that guy again to see when the next time we can go meet with him. The bad thing is the next two weekends will be shot with Mardi Gras activities.

We go to New Orleans for these parades every year as they pass in front of my granparents house Fri, Sat, & Sun. Its safe for the kids with all the family there and they have a blast and catch a lot. Following weekend we'll be in town. We (You, Marty and the family)should get togehter then and catch a parade or so. I usually park at the office and walk accross the street to Albertsons and catch the parades there. It usually easy to get in and out there. Rebecca don't like to come so I usually take the kids and could use the company.

Max Winches

Nice prices on these Aussie made winches. Worth looking into if you need a winch.

LOL, you beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing in here about seeing you today. I drive that same route everyday to and from work. Your truck looked great coming from a mile away.

LOL. Just seeing what I can break so I need to know what to fix. My wife says I can't leave well enough alone. Why the deadline on the 3FE does he have someone else looking at it. Now that we have Michael on here we can ask him about the fuel injection he went wth. Michael did you go with GM TBI setup. I know you really like it. We're looking at going with a 3FE head and EFI setup as it looked to be a realy nice setup but I heard the TBI is also nice. I'd really like to talk with you more about it. Scott is looking at going this way on the rebuild of his 79 2F.

Looking good Jacque. I was just at Percy Guidry iron works this morning getting some u-bolt plate metal cut. When I pick them up next week I'll look into what they have for you and a price. I'll be in Gretna for the parades this weekend. You heading home?

Larry

I'll do my best to help a brotha out. I don't think I can swing a 14hr round trip drive to bring it out there myself but I'll do what I can. I also have a friend that runs cars from auctions here in the Lafayette area to Dallas and Houston on a regular basis. I could give him a few extra bucks to throw it in the truck with him. Let me know the details and I'll see what I can do.

Well, here's the deal: I did tons of research. I consider myself very mechanically inclined. I've only been to a mechanic 3 times in my life. Usually due to lack of time or tools. At any rate, I too contemplated the 3F head/injection option at first. WHY? well, until very recently, I would consider myself a Landcruiser Purist. I would have never have put a WEBER, much less a GM TBI!!! In the past I'd come to believe in Genuine Toyota ONLY. NEVER found any aftermarket parts that weren't junk. Regret almost every aftermarket purchase I ever made (mostly from SOR and CCOT...the latter being NOTORIOUS for AFT. junk). I usually end up putting the ORIGINAL OEM part back on when the AFT. part fails. I know I should have saved that for a separate thread, but I had to vent. I always ran NON-USA carbs and distributors. Alot of people don't realize that most LC's don't have vacuum advance (only the really old ones and the late 70s on). Anyway, The 3FE head on a 2F was my original plan. In the end, having discussed this with mechanics, I concluded that the GM TBI was cheap, reliable, proven, and easy to program, fine-tune etc. Parts everywhere. You could literally break down in the middle of nowhere and get a ECU, and any other part from a parts house or junk yard-no problem. I almost had a custom Multiport built, but decided against it. Theoretically it could/would be better, but again, mechanics and others convinced me TBI was simpler and that the advantages of multiport were exaggerated.

Let me speed this up a bit...okay, anyway, once I made up my mind I ordered a few parts and began the TBI project. I want to emphasize that my truck was running GREAT before this upgrade. (I had a brand new Weber 38/38). I didn't expect much really. Boy was I in for a surprise. The EFI made my truck run like a totally different engine and tranny were installed! You actually have to drive it to know what I mean. I would go so far as to say that my 40 feels more powerful than my 4.5L FZJ80. Also, unlike the 80, I can program the GM with my pocket programmer. TUrn on or off EGR, whatever I want. I currently have a spare computer, spare manifold adapter, and even a spare TBI!!! Why? Well, I have a hobby and love spending money on my cruiser! I just put in a brand new Throttle body (650cfm holley actually). I also bought someone else's fine-tuned ECU. I found out that any ECU out of a late eighties-early nineties GM w/4.3L v6 worked great in the 2F as-is. The absolute best advice I can give anyone regardless of 3FE->2f or GM TBI, whatever is: GET A WIRING HARNESS! Painless is TOTALLY worth it. Awesome investment. Finally, I have a hookup on getting the O2 sensor welded in. I run headers and found that you have to use a heated O2 sensor.

Finally, if you seriously decide to do the GM TBI, I'd be happy to help. I currently run the custom DUI HEI distributor (not the regular HEI, but the one for TBI), a Vehicle speed sensor, heated O2 sensor, MAP, temp and knock sensor (though I'm considering disabling that). The hardest part to me was getting the throttle linkage right. I'm currently about to redo mine. Also, I hate running an Open air cleaner, and I'm NOT a K&N fan. I plan to put an FZJ80 air box on mine (if I can find the room!) since its free flowing (unline the '78) and has the dust collector and water proof (like the diesels).

Whew! nuff said for now. In the end, the cruiser starts in the garage with virtually No smell, and has incredible drivability and power...can pass on uphills turning huge tires, etc...no more whine when letting off the gas in lower gears, etc...actually wants to hold you there instead...very nice.

NON-USA and favorite stock setup

I just wanted to mention that I strongly feel that North America got robbed and that we should have recieved full floaters, diesels, etc. I've run split rims and non-usa setups before and absolutely love the setup. I would never go back to Weber ever again, though it is a lot cheaper. If not EFI, then NON-USA for me. Hooks right up to your stock air cleaner and fuel lines. NO mods necessary. They are awesome. My 1963 FJ40 had all out Vacuum advance, but I think that the best distributor for a 2F is to take the side cover off of a FJ60 and put it on your FJ40. The FJ60 (i.e., '81 thru '87) large cap distributor is awesome! Waterproof, teflon coated internals, electronic, etc PLUS has two vacuum advance ports (I tee them together). If you are running a pre-75 distributor, you might consider running one of these...I am also a firm believer in diesel for offroad/4x4 usage. I almost sold my 40 series to pickup a 70-series w/5spd and diesel, but alas it wasn't turbo-charged...

Thoughts on Milemarker? or perhaps another PTO...

I was thinking about Mile Marker...actually looking hard at the MileMarker hydraulic winches. I really miss my PTO unit though...regret selling it...at any rate, the Mile Marker seems pretty well proven. I don't care how fast it pulls, just so it pulls hard and doesn't burn up! I'm kinda looking for another factory PTO however...miss mine...
