Canadian insurance companies no longer RHD friendly?
I just received a letter in the mail from my broker telling me that my Toyota now has a $5000 deductible. I have 4 vehichles insured all with liability coverage. I have no tickets or accidents and have been with Wawanesa Ins for many years. The Toyota has been on my policy for over a year and the only reason I can see for the change in deductible is the RHD. My broker is away for a few days and no one else could give me an awnser as to why. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

I just added another RHD Toyota to my policy, like the first one, the agent knew it was imported from Japan, but never asked about RHD. The agent simply used the tables for the corresponding N.American model to calculate the collision and comprehensive.
If they tried that with me I'd go shop around.

I called Wawanesaa, they said it is nothing to do with RHD or safety. Just the cost of replacing parts on a older import (they mentioned Skylines).
also ING does not want to insure imports.
I went to Peace Hills, full coverage with $250 deductable.

This issue of insurance companies not providing coverage of our RHD vehicles is currently being discussed by the committee of IVOAC. We hope to have a plan of action soon and will probably need the help of all RHD enthusiasts.

yes, soem insurance companies are getting nervous with the payouts they are making due to not being informed.
we will have a list of insurance friendly companies up and are int eh process of making a memo to send off to the companies letting them know we are willing to work with them in getting parts and honest appraisals so unscruplious persons can not go ripping off the companies thus causing grief for the rest of us...

No problem with ICBC at this point. I'll definitely update if that changes.

Talked to ins broker today, and he said that wawanesa was applying $5000 deductible to all right hand drive vehichles. All though he couldn't give me a reason. So I guess we can assume it has to do with the higher cost of replacement parts as mentioned earleir. I guess its time to switch companay's.

I live North of Toronto and Dominion of Canada insured my truck. I think my deductible is $500 and they know it's a RHD Import. My rate it not that great but then again I am a 24 year old male with 2 tickets

I have two rhd vehicles insured through Meloche Monnex and have had no problems at all. If the vehicle is not in their "list" they want an appraisal done first, but thats about it.

I have the same trouble with Wawanessa.
My BJ74 has liability only and they will only give me $5000 deductable on collision and comprehesive and then only with an appraisal. A $5000 deductable might as well be self insured so I'm shopping for another provider. Taking my house, and other two vehicle's insurance with me.

As far as I know, ICBC has no issues, but then again I havent had my RHD 45 on the road in a few years. The only problems I ever had were with aircare. It always passed but stupid questions from stupid employees always made it a hassle. I did have to get a BC assigned VIN one year as there wasnt one to be found anywhere on it.

ICBC doesn't give a crap. Whenever I see things like "my insurance is high because I'm 24 years old and have tickets" I crack up. Private auto insurance is a joke.

Insurance In Quebec
I have read through the post, and I was insure by Desjardins, without liability, and my skyline got wrecked and totalled, now im looking for a new insurance company and tried calling some of you guy suggested.
TD Meloche Monnex is a Group Insurance Only
Cooperators is also Group Insurance
Dominion Of Canada Won't Insura RHD Anymore
Still looking at ICBC and Peace Hills.
Is there anything else I could look into?
Thank You.

Has anybody had issues with ICBC after an accident?
Are they more likely to wright it off then make a repair?

I've been through twice without much problem.. the first accident was about 8 grand in side damage and the second a more minor hit to a rear quarter. I was keeping a keen ear out for any RHD slags or comments but it seemed a non issue.
Like any unique vehicle - take plenty of photos to show condition - don't play games with value declaration to skirt taxes or that will really bite you in the ass - and keep all reciepts for upgrades or major repairs..

JDM parts and repairs can be a bit of a pain. Its now about 3 months to get my Safari fixed up. The autobody shop blames the JDM parts supplier and the JDM parts supplier blames the autobody shop. I had taken my rig to this shop once before and had no poblems for som simple body work. So far I got one new mud flap that cost the shop nearly $300. The owner was cleaning up and threw my old one away. That was nearly a month delay. The rest is just a comedy of errors in ordering the parts - except I'm not laughing. There were only a couple parts they needed: a flare and its gasket and a rotor.
Lesson one: ICBC will not help find parts. The adjuster was down right hostile to JDMs. Lesson two: go to a shop that has a relationship with a JDM part supplier and knows what they are talking about. Oh, and don't believe ICBC when they get the model and year of your rig wrong and tell you " don't worry about it, we'll just call the shop and give them the correct information." Somehow my 1991 Nissan Safari became a 1991 Pathfinder. The kicker was on Friday when I was told the paper work now says a 2003 Pathfinder. Oh, and the body shop realized they had the wrong bloody flare all nicely [painted and ready to go on.

I'm insured by autoplan. No prob what so ever. And as for parts I can use any 4runner parts for my truck as long as its the year 94 and up. I drive a 91 HDJ81. I've swap a part already and it bolted right on. Just my 2 cents
