Rebuild 60 carb
The rebuild of the carb is done and it made a world of difference. I still have some type of vacume leak to fix. Does anyone know if the manifold gasket is prone leaks? BTW this was the dirtiest carb I've seen
Thanks
John

I bet I got to the point that I would refuse to work on it til he fixed the carb.
I know the gasket between the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold (under the carb) could be replaced. Id start there.

The cheap way to find your leak is to start the truck and let it come to idle. The with a can of starting fluid (ether) spray at the base of the carb or any other suspect area. If the idle comes up or runs faster, thats where your leak is.
Congrats on the quick clean and rebuild! I just put the other carb in a box with your name on it! No biggee though, there's always somebody that can use a 60 series smog carb.
BTW, I have a relatively unabused carb baseplate if that's where the leak is coming from.

Thanks Phil. I tried the starter fuel all around the carb with no results however when sprayed where the exhaust and intake manifold join it caused a change in the idle speed.

Try cinching up the manifold bolts to seal the leak. If that doesn't do it, start spraying the manifold bolts with some PB Blaster. You'll have to change the manifold gasket.

The manifold gaskets are prone to leaking, and also unfortunately the intake manifold is prone to cracking as it sits right on top of the exhaust manifold. If the bi-metal coil assembly that redirects exhaust while the engine is cold happens to stick in the restricted position, it will essentially cook the intake manifold until it cracks. Check that area as well.

Use carb cleaner so you don't blow up.
You can also use an unlit propane torch.

Thanks for all the input. Now I need the weather to stay good since I'm doing this in my driveway. BTW my neighbors have been giving me dirty looks here in St.Charles.
Thanks

Where the fun in that Todd? You probably only have those little kindy garden scissors in your shop. Then again, you do have a point. You are the first shop teacher I met that isn't missing a body part.

Another noob question? Will the intake manifold gasket leak cause me not to be able to dial in the carb?
Thanks

Yes. Vacuum leaks will throw everything off (idle fuel, mixture, throttle response, etc)!

How much time should I allow to remove and re-install the intake/exhaust gaskets. I do'nt want to displace the wifes car overnite and I'm tired of working outside in the rain.

If you've never done it before, allow yourself a full Saturday as the task of putting all the vac lines back on is very time consuming, but not difficult. Make sure you have a good diagram (a printed copy of the one on the passenger inner fender is a good one) or the FSM Emissions manual. Also take a picture of how the carb linkages are before you pull them off. They can be easily installed incorrectly. Shouldn't be too difficult of a job. If you have any weekdays off, I'd be more than happy to help you up in my garage in the North suburbs.

I do need help and I have no commitments monday thru wednesday. My tool selection is very limited so any advice on this issue would be helpful. I believe the 2f has been de-smoged if that helps any but what do I know I'm a noob.
Thanks
John

yes it has been de-smoged. And that has all been torn apart recently so it should come apart no problem. Should only take you an afternoon with basic tools.

Thanks for the help on these questions. I'm going for it in the morning right after my visit to unemployment. Is any adhesive used with the gaskets?
Thanks

Well, if you're already desmogged, then the job is a piece of cake like John said. Putting all the smog equipment back on is the challenge. I'll PM you my phone number if you have any questions.
Good luck.
Rob

Well the disassembly went good only broke 2 -14mm bolts when splitting the manifolds. The 2 gaskets sandwich some sort of deflector plate which is NFG. Is this defelector plate needed and where might I find one? Carquest has no listing for this part. What is the best way to clean the intake manifold?
Thanks
John

Ginger's WIFE has owned A cruiser longer than Phil, and both of you drive 62s which hardly qualify.
You are right that a FJC isn't a cruiser. It's a 2 door 4th gen 4Skinner.
all that being said -- Ginger bends a mean tube which slightly trumps Phil's ability to buy a mean beer. But just by a little.
