The new "H" or "M"?

What is the new icon next to each forum? I clicked on one, and it said mark forum read? Enlighten me please.

It's an M. It shows if the forum has been read or not. If it's a bright yellow there are unread threads in the forum. If it's dull yellow you have read every thing in that forum.

The old dots did the same thing, but were easier to see IMHO.
