We ask a simple question
And that is all we wish:
Are fishermen all liars?
Or do only liars fish?

To me heaven would be a big bull ring with me holding two barrera seats and a trout stream outside that no one else was allowed to fish in and two lovely houses in the town; one where I would have my wife and children and be monogamous and love them truly and well and the other where I would have my nine beautiful mistresses on nine different floors.
- Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961)

Jumping Fish Lands Suwannee River Boater In Hospital

POSTED: 3:10 pm EDT April 24, 2006

A 31-year-old woman boating on the Suwannee River on Saturday was hospitalized after she was struck by three-foot fish that jumped into the boat, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Dawn Poirer and Johnston Staples III, 39, both from Pinellas County, Fla., were motoring on the river in Gilchrist County, when the fish, believed to be a sturgeon, jumped and hit Poirer in the face.

She was taken to a nearby residence, where 911 was called. Poirer was taken by air ambulance to Shands-Gainesville Medical Center. Her condition was not reported.

FWC investigators said the 19-foot boat sustained about $1,000 in damages to the rear seat and motor cowling.

One trait that makes the white sturgeon so unusual is its incredibly long lifespan. Some individuals are over 100 years old - these individuals were around even before British Columbia became part of Canada. Given their long life, they tend to grow slowly and are not ready to spawn until the females are over 18 years of age and males are at least 14 years of age. Unlike many salmon species that spawn once and die, white sturgeon are capable of spawning many times throughout their life.

yer not the only one who has done that

Sounds like the sturgeons' sex life is the same as most kids!

Great whites are truly monsters. Like crocodiles they awaken our most deeply seated fears of horrific death. Thinking about watching them jump like that after seals and then having them close to my boat makes me shudder...
