This is a photo I took of a patient of mine several years ago, right before surgery to remove this "foreign body".

This guy was fishing for steelhead near the mouth of the Columbia River and catching quite a few. He noticed someone fishing downstream a bit who obviously didn't know his way around because he was casting to the absolute worst spot. My patient invited the guy over to fish in his spot, which invitation was gladly accepted. Five minutes later the new guy hooked my patient in the eye.

He ultimately did well. The hook did not penetrate full thickness into the eye, but tunnelled through mid-stroma in the cornea. I had to cut the hook to get it out. I ruined two small wire cutters before one of the OR nurses ran over to the orthopedics room and borrowed some big hulking ones that cut the hook easily.

I was in my residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. I presented the case at grand rounds.

Damn it! I knew I should have taken a picture of my hooked thumb this weekend. I was just pulling it out of the car and one of the trebles went in right along side and under my thumbnail near the cuticle. All the way to the barb and luckily stopped. I think it's infected.

Dude, if you think it's infected seek care now. Don't wait. Puncture wounds can be super nasty and do permanent damage. Is your tetanus up to date? I recommend epsom salt soaks in really hot water now and see a doc ASAP.

Yooper he should see his doc only if he enjoys his thumb,

My brother in law called me asking me to treat his thumb infection, I refused and told him to go to his doc. 2 hours later in the OR having it opened and drained.

Don't mess around with fingers 646 ing is probably not the same without a thumb.

Talking Fish tales

I have a small large mouth bass mounted in my office.
My now departed fishing buddy, Helmut the bird dog, used
to go on point for fish. I kid you not!
He went on point one day as I passed a dock while retrieving
a trolling lure. He held point as I passed the dock. The lure
was a deep runner so as I reeled it in it tumbled on the surface.
The dang bass came from under the dock and went AIRBORNE
to nail my lure. The dog went nuts when I brought it on board.
He scanned for fish thereafter and would point when they were present.
I took a pic of him pointing in a cove with a small school of bass
out in front of him because NOBODY believed the boy would point fish.
I love to tell the story when people ask about that wall mounted bass.

I had a dog that would point fish, but only out of the water. When I pulled a fish out, she would point, or if I pulled a stringer of fish out of the water or was carrying the stringer of fish up to the house, she would stop and go on point. Pretty funny. That was a good dog, though.

My current dog has to use all of her self control not to jump in the water after my lure every time I cast.

I had a dog that would bark like crazy at turtles. Funny smelling rocks? Who knows. We'd bring them into the house, they'd shut down, dog would go nuts. Then we'd bring in rocks, dog would bark at the rocks.

Fishing with a spey rod it is very easy to end up with hooks in the wrong place. I buried a large hook to the bottom of the bend in my eye. First thing I did was grab it to imobilize it. The 300 gr spey line was dragging in the fast current trying to rip it out. Got out of the water and buddy one turns white when he sees it. Buddy two, a tough guy, screams and says "Fawk you go to a doctor." I go to the truck and look in the rear view mirror. The hook was buried in the eye socket and stuck in the bone. Fawkit, the salmon are just starting to run. I pulled it out slowly and didn't destroy anything. Oh yes, I caught three salmon after that.

Anyone fish with barbless hooks? I'm thinking of doing it when I go with the kids. What are the downsides?

When My Dad took me out on my first fishing trip at the age of five, we went fishing in a local disused granite stone quarry that had been flooded and stocked with tench, rud and carp.

After a few mins I fell in, my Dad quickly jumped in and pulled me out onto the shore; when I came around, I said -

"Don’t tell mum she will never let us go fishing again".

LOL! That is not bad thinking for a five year old kid!! I guess fishing was important to me at even a young age!!
