meet joe, the new yawk fireman I took out today. He nailed a 100lb tarpon right out of the barn, which we lost at the boat, caught prolly 50 nice spanish mackeral, a 3lb mangrove snapper, a nice blacktip and the only pic I took was of a big jack he got at the dock.

I'm going to have to come out your way sometime and give that a try.
Isn't it lobster season? We need pics of some of those...

yeah he normally slips off away from everyone else, and takes a few extra lures.

Had 4 skirted bally's in the spread. This was my 5th/center line that had a green skirt/feather. Damn thing passed up the ballys for an artificial. It skyrocketed about 10+ feet when it hit.

I have had 'cuda in the islands many years ago and you are right, it is indeed pretty good. The rule is don't eat if it's bigger than your arm. Recent problem here with several cases of citagura (sp?) poisoning of people who ate grouper caught in the Bahamas. Some pretty sick amigos....

my kid's favorite trick is to use a steel leader and get a spanish mackeral on, then toss it back to the cudas......it's hilarious when they hit that thing, the jumps are amazing.

I have heard that gar is edible but trouble to deal with because of the numerous bones. I've not tried to eat any. I released this one alive. I'm doing turtle research down in the lower part of the Mobile drainage using hoop nets and often catch fish. Because the nets are set for scientific purposes I can't legally keep game fish.

Alligator gar can be especially impressive and hard to handle because of the thick slime coating. I've also been catching a lot of spotted gar. Because this area is tidally influenced I'm seeing a mix of fresh and saltwater species - the gar, white crappie, largemouth bass, sunfish, paddlefish in the main channel, flounder, blue crab, and barnacles.

have you ever heard of cooking a pig in the ground, you can do gar the same way.

you get a hardwood 1 x 8
scale and gut the gar
place on 1 x 8, tie to board with that cotton chef's string
pack the body caviity with onions and garlic
place gar in prepared hole, and seal with some nice grey clay.
cover with fire cook for about 8 hours

when you uncover, throw the gar away and eat the board, it will taste better than the gar.

my grandpaw use to make meat balls out of the backstrap, it wasn't that good but we ate it anyway.

edit: and you're right that is a small one, but they are a blast to catch, bow fishing, rod and reel rigged with a steel leader, noodling (we called it grappling or hand fishing back home)

Smallest fish I ever caught

I have the fortunate circumstance to grow up in Louisiana and do all kinds of fishing. I spent the summers in my college years a deckhand on a 55' Sportfisher catching marlin, tuna and mahi. You've seen my posts of specks and reds. Of all the fishing I've done, I have never fly fished. Here's why:

I borrowed a friend's setup and flies and had a blast. Beautiful country in NC, but if i go casting again, they better get bigger...

I caught a perch this summer on a rapala jointed that was easily 1/2 LARGER than the Perch.

Did not make sense.

Nice snook and poon! Do you find the fishing better after something like Fay? Was the water pretty dirty from the run-off, etc?
