The one that got away

The biggest fish I ever almost caught got away from me this weekend. I can't quit thinking about it. This flathead catfish was easily over 50 pounds, I saw him for an instant and almost had my net under him when he straightened the hook and got off.

So close, but yet so far. Damn!

Silver thing in the picture is a quarter.

that knot would not be my first choice for that hook... the knot you have used presents the hook in a weaker position. imho

i recommend this knot, we use the bumper knot for pacific north west stealhead fishing...

Yep, and I know where he lives now. After seeing that fish, I think I need to get bigger hooks too.

Cool, I'll have to give that knot a try. I'm not sure how well it will work for my leaders, though, which are 2 strands of 65 pound test Power Pro.

in that case, i would consider a change in hook eye type.

I've never used circle hooks for cats, but would that work? I think in a situation where you're not actively fishing (reeling a lure through the water) like catfishing, a circle hook would work. And possibly the Trilene knot? Ever since I lost not one, but TWO big flippin' fish in the same summer to pulling my knots out, I pay extra close attention!

The circle hooks definitely work on catfish. Once they've hooked themselves it's almost impossible for them to get off the line. The only downside is that it is usually a pain in the rear to get the hook out of their mouth when you get them in the boat.

These are on limb lines tied to a tree on the bank and stretched out about 20 feet with 5 hooks per line. They are baited with live perch. I'm going to set them out again tonight with a bungee cord attached at the bank end so they can't get so much leverage when they stretch the line out.

Love the Chessie catching perch. Does he eat them after catching them or just roll in them?

Chesapeake retriever with one of his perch catches. Yes he can,(1 out of 15 success rate) grab fish. He waits by the bank, at a dam where there are lots of fish. Sometimes he puts his head underwater.......and waits....

He eats the head only. Catfish are also on the menu. But i have to catch those for him. He will also swim for and hour, next to me while i'm wading. But after an hour, he will swim back to the bank for a 10 minute rest. Then come back out for another 1/2 hour etc. We live on the river, so he swims constantly. (when he not on guard)
Chessy's are very good watch animals. People cannot sneak up on me with him around. He doesn't go after you.....he justs barks to beat the band. I tell him to shut it, and he stops.

That's a fishing method I've never seen used before. Are those just PVC pipes driven down into the bottom of the river?

Yes, brother Rhino, those are just pvc. But they work well for big flatheads. They bend like mad and the strength is unmatched. They will hold 60 lb fish. That's the biggest we have caught and released. Don't keep the big ones. Were after the National record, which is 123lbs.
Our goal is to utilize the river for food. Less money spent at wal-mart.
And to be the best hillbillies we can be!

I will take some pics of them.
one is just a stainless, but expensive, single hook. That's the bait hook.
The other is a treble, below it.

Rhino, here's the hooks we use. Don't remember what size's though. Just go to the bait shop and get the sharpest, stainless hooks you can get. Beefy is better.
