what lurks beneath
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So I'm taking a friend fishing on the Pearl River. We drove down to the sand bar in my 60 with canoe on top. Get out on the water and drop my buddy off on the rocks to fly fish for stripers. Some guys over on the other side motion for me to come over as if needing some assistance. What the heck, I paddle over. Turns out one of them had a fish on line which he couldn't manage to land. Requests a boat ride out to the fish. Having never sat in a canoe before, he nearly tips us over trying to get in. After a quick lesson about center of gravity we real his line in out to the middle of the river. For the next 15-20 minutes we were pulled around by SOMETHING very large. Finally gets tired enough to surface revealing a catfish about the size of my canoe. (well.....) Unable to pull said creature into said boat, we make our way over to the bank, hop out, wade in. I take the pole and keep the (now exhausted) lunker on line while my new friend wades out with a stringer and wrestles the fish to shore. View the results: Weighed in at 49 lbs. __________________ Barry Hause shunpiker parts vulture Homegrown '82 fj60--managed entropy eclectic mods and second hand parts "One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives." -Euripedes PLEASE HELP ERIC HAGEN AKA LANDSPEEDER http://forum.ih8mud.com/ms-cottonlan...ease-read.html |

How does one cook those big cats? Is the meat any good?

Ideally, I think the smaller cats would be better tasting, but I know quite a few folks that will cut the filets into strips and fry them and I believe they're okay tasting. Some fish, once they get that big, taste nasty. Not sure about the cats though.

Beagles Rule!

Quote:
As far as the toughness of the meat, it depends on the water movement. If you pull a catfish out of a fast running river it will be a little tougher than one pulled from a farm pond. In a pond they do not develope the muscles like they would fighting the current constantly. |

Great pic's everyone! Going fishing on the Valles Caldera National Preserve(The old Baca ranch in northern New Mexico) this Sunday. Hope to get some good fishing in. Mostly Browns, but if I get a few good pic's I'll try to post.
I'm in north central New Mexico, pretty good fishing in these parts, 98% trout, but catch small mouth, and northern Pike in the Rio Grande. If anybody find themselves around the area, feel free to call for info, or a fishing partner. velardechile@yahoo.com |

Both caught in tribs of the Skeena river (northern BC).
both caught with a med action 10.5ft rod and a level wind baitcaster with 25lb test-line. One on a Jig the other with Roe. If you hook a big fish 50+lbs they usually make a fool of you. The record chinook for these waters was just broken a few years back and if I remember it was in the 90lb range. __________________ "Stupid things, happen to smart people that are affraid to ask stupid questions" 93 FZJ80 Full Load w/lockers, 2.5 OME, #7pin/CDL, Custom Bumper w/M8274, 315 MTZs 78 FJ40 Retired.....never left me, not once. 81LJ, 89JLX, 01Vitara SUZUKI wifemobiles (the only other 4X4 to own) 76 Chevy PU 292 6cyl, Restored w/collector plates |

How long does it take to land one of those? Do you have to set the drag real low and let it run line out till it gets tired?

It depends on the fish and how it likes being hooked, sometimes if you hook them "gently" you can get them to swim within view before they take the first run.
Once they turn and go down river, crank up the drag and hope they turn again before you get spooled and your thumb roasted. You can "gear up" with a super stout rod and 60lb braid, but that takes the sport out of playing a nice 25lb chrome bullet. Regs here are single barbless hook only, so they will spit out the hook if they get a chance. Most take less then 20min to land or get off. A few years back I spent about 30min and landed a 44 pounder. Its like tying your line to your dog and letting a rabbit out of a box on a football field (not much you can do to stop him just hang-on and hope he does not leave the field) These fish don't live in the river, they are heading for spawning beds up stream, they have surived in the pacific for 6 years before they spawn and die.

Those are all on the upper Rouge. From mid Sept to mid Nov I will be on the river 50 days. As a rule, I don't fish when a client is in the boat. At $375 per day I wouldn't want to watch my guide catching fish that I paid good money to fish for. But so far this season I have hooked three pigs while showing clients how to get a good drift. They have broken all of them off when I handed the rod to them. One was commenting that he thought I hooked a rock when a 30" hen exploaded from the water. Nope, thats not a rock. I want to see one of my clients break 30-34" this season so bad I can taste it. I know where it will happen it is just so hard to find a client that can get a good drift through the big fish buckets. ![]() |
