The thing with fly fishing is it is the easiest and most fun way catch to game fish! After you have done fly fishing you will think that casting is spinner or spoon is like casting an old truck bumper . But all types of fishing is good, I still spin cast for fish from time to time.

There are a lot of myths out there about fly fishing, most of which stem from folk thinking they are superior because they fly fish "snob value".

This one goes way back, but I'm chiming in here.

Down here in South Louisiana, we jerk bream and cats and fish for bass with heavy bass gear b/c the water is so muddy and full of all kinds of debris. Fly fishing was as foreign to me as Russian but about 4 years ago I moved up to New Hampshire and while I was up there, i swore that i'd learn how to fly fish. It was a MF at first but I got the hang of it after losing many flies and tippet to blueberry bushes, trees and grass out in the water. When I finally landed a smallmouth on the Androscoggin River, I was hooked! Fly fishing is awesome and very rewarding. Relaxing too. A lot of gear can be had for pretty cheap and I recommend anyone interested in it, giving it a shot and seeing what they think.

He ended up reeling in a 10.5 lb bass.

After he put it in the well he rinsed off his hands and cast it out again and proceeded to take a bite out of his sandwich... he had to drop it to keep the rod from going overboard and when he got it in it was a 12 pounder. He put it in the well and cast out the worm again and picked up his sandwich and dusted it off. He stuck the sandwich in his mouth and bam the rod is headed for the canal again!

He finally got that bass in and it weighed 14! He still had the sandwich in his mouth when I said to him: 'If your not done with that SAMWICH, pass it over here! I still haven't gotten a bite.'

He had all three fish mounted and put them in his Florida room. He loves to tell the story, especially about how he is such a better fisherman than I am.

How did the Warden feel about him fishing in the brood pond?

Some days you just get lucky...

Speaking of which, me and my good friends host the Hook, Line and Drinker Fishing Tournament every spring or summer. The first year was tough b/c the fishing was slow and it was God awful hot! One of our teams failed to land a fish all day long and they finally gave up before the end of legal fishing time. So they started idling back to deeper water and a freakin' mullet jumped in the boat! Now, the funny thing is, we have a Trash Fish category. So, after a full day of NOTHING, they all of a sudden have SOMETHING and all due to a crazy twist of fate. Elsewhere across the lake, a similar situation is brewing but one of our friends only catches one catfish (which makes it in our Trash Fish category). He thinks he's getting a trophy and back at the landing, his partner who had had a few too many in the late afternoon sun, goes through the live well, starts chunking fish over board and grabs that catfish and informs everyone that it was the smaller of the two and chunks it overboard as well. Well, they had only caught one catfish and it was swimming away before ever being weighed.

The flying mullet won! We got lots of laughs.

From the sounds of it, I bet there was more than one mullet in that boat!

Actually, no mullets in our crew. Probably should be a few but we're fairly clean cut.

We lived on the James River in Richmond, VA about 10 years ago. It is a hot spot for small mouth bass. No fishin' story hear, but at some times of the year, you could catch a fish every third cast with a grey Yamamoto. It was at that point, when I had caught as many fish as I cared to on spinning tackle, that I got into fly fishing.

Man, I am hooked. I used to be an avid waterfowl and bird hunter. But, now that I fly fish, I never think about planning hunting trips. I've decided that, even though I'll catch a hell of a lot less fish, I am no long fishing with anything but dry flys. Yeah, streamers and nymphs work better, but it is not nearly as fun as seeing a trout hit a dry fly.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a fly fishing snob and I can't stand those guys. But, if you have not tried fly fishing, get a decent set-up, one lesson, and give it a try. You'll like it.

Here is a good tale the Mrs pulled off a BB we watch for the St Croix River. jen caught a 5lb channel cat out there a couple of years ago, those babies do not want to come up. If any of yu are ever in the St Paul area and want to fish look us up. We have a boat on the river and love the area......

The story........

Dang, I got a snag!!!
#421516 - 11/27/06 09:00 AM

Got out on the Croix on Saturday... what a beautiful day - the water was like glass, very little wind, almost nobody else on the water... so peaceful...

I took my two sons and one of their friends out with me. We started jigging for walleye at a spot I had some luck at a few weeks ago but we couldn't find any shad clouds and only had one bite in about a half-hour. We decided to go to our 'never fail' spot and had two nice fish in the box within 10-15 minutes of setting up shop. I glanced at my fish-finding and saw a very LARGE mark on the screen, just off the bottom. My son's friend was at the stern and told him to just hold his jig a few inches off the bottom. After a few minutes, he exclaimed "Dang, I got a snag" as he pulled hard on his line. After a few seconds, the 'snag' suddenly pulled back - hard. FISH ON!!!

He was running 8 lbs mono on his spool so when the fish took off, the drag sung like crazy. The rest of us in the boat pulled up our lines and I grabbed the troller motor controls. That fish took us on quite a journey! We started in about 25-30 fow and the fish followed the contour of the ridge across the river. It seemed to know exactly where it was headed - we ended up directly over a bowl that bottomed out at 65 fow and the fish headed straight down to the bottom. Over the next hour, we were able to get the fish up to about 15-20 fow 3-4 times, each time, the fish would dive back down, peeling drag...

At the 1 hour, 10 minute mark (several boats had gone by us and returned during this time), it seemed like the fish was finally giving in... working slowly, pulling up a few feet at a time, we made headway... I couldn't believe the bubbles that darn thing was giving off - one of my sons commented that maybe we hooked up a submarine! I kept the boat positioned so that the fish was coming up directly to the side of the boat - so that I could either grab it by hand or my son could try to scoop it with a large net. Slowly, the kid pulled the fish toward the surface. A few feet up, a slight pull back down - it was truly 2 steps up, 1 step down with each draw.

We had the fish within a few feet of the surface - almost an hour and half had gone by - my youngest son exclained "look at the size of that!!!" - and then the unmentionable happened... SNAP!!! the line broke after the fish gave a good headshake . We all looked at each other for a few moments - nobody said anything except for the occasional expletives uttered by all - as we were dumbfounded by what had just happened....

My son was the only that got a look at the fish - he described it as nearly 2 feet wide at the pectorals that tapered back toward the tail. He didn't see the head clearly nor the tail, just the midsection. From what he described (brownish, shaped like a big fat teardrop; two feet across at the widest part), sounds to me like a huge flathead... we'll never know for sure...

By this time, the sun was setting and it was time to go in... we quietly stored the gear and headed back to the launch site in Hudson.

Buddy of mine is from "Down da bayou" around Golden Meadow, LA. Cajun to the core. He married a woman from Singapore. Both can cook. Chris and I would run 30 miles offshore out of Delcambre, fish all night for specks at the Eugene Island 51 rig, come in, sleep and later he and his wife would cook Asian-Cajun! They worked some magic on the fish and sides.

I'm getting hungry now.
