The bass had these weird little black dots in its flesh. Does anyone know what these are? I'm worried they are parasites. I froze the filets and will be bringing them to the state fisheries biologist here.

Wow, good service. I emailed the local fishery biologist and sent him those pics and he already responded. I ain't eatin' it, though.

Quote:
Sean,

You will see these "black spots" in many species of fish in this area. What your seeing is a Metacercaria or larva of a bird or fish tapeworm. Some tapeworm species have yellow grubs which you may or may not have seen. As noted the adult tapeworm lives in a bird or fish. That animal will shed eggs into the water with its feces. The mature egg finds a first host like a snail or invertebrate animal. That first host is eaten by the fish (second host) where the metacercaria forms in the muscle. Should a bird or fish eat the second host then the larva will develop into a tapeworm . These parasite are very host specific and if you see that one individual fish in that lake has grubs. Its very likely all individuals if that same species could be infected at some rate. Making the fish not very pleasing to look at or eat.

You don't have the metabolism of a bird or fish which prevents human infection. Normal cooking of the fish destroys the grub and the flavor of the fish is not altered.

Regards!

Sean

The link below may provide a correct diagnosis, also I think the same as above.

Yeah, same thing. I chose not to eat it! I wish I hadn't discarded the carcass back in the lake.

Hey Mudders!

Finally made it back from my trip to Utah. Just a couple of pics for TUFT. These were the first trout I've caught since I was a kid and I was stoked. We camped in Taylor Canyon Colorado and I caught 3 rainbows along the Taylor river up and down from my camp site. This was the biggest of them. Then we stopped at a rec site along another river in Colorado and I was lucky enough to get this one while the family had a lunch break.

Quite a bit different than the type of fishing I'm used to in TX. I can't wait to move back to the mountains.

Enjoy!

Nice pics and nice fish, Hawkdriver! The rainbow is the most beautiful fish in my books. Is the last pic one of a brownie?

Thanks guys, the rainbow is also the top of my book and I can't wait to catch a monster on a fly rod someday.

Yup the last one musta been a brown, I caught him on the Arkansas river 50 miles or so up from Canon City CO.

Can't wait to go back.

Nice trout you caught there hawk. Yup, that last one is a brown and a beauty it is too.

I caught this on Saturday at Crawford Lake here in Colorado. It's 30" long. I caught it on a 6 weight fly rod with 6 lb flourocarbon tippet. It took a little bit to get in.

Caught this 5 pound king in Lake Superior this morning before work. Also got a little lake trout, maybe 2 pounds. In this pic we have six lines out, two on each downrigger and two more with Dipsy Divers. Only got tangled once, which is amazing as we're just learning this type of fishing. We covered the water depth from 20 to 60 feet. The kinger was at about 45 feet. Salmon season has begun!

cool Yooper, so your king = our chinook/spring right?

couple of questions about the lake version since i fish the sea kind.

-what do they hit? we would troll super slow S turns with a hoochie or apex type lure or cut plug and maybe a flasher.

-can you eat'em at any size? i hear they have contamination issues

-do they sound when they fight? Chinooks here will go down deep then charge you and repeat then finally run away on the surface. they rarely clear the water.

I don't know if I can play in this thread, but I just got back from 9 days in Alaska fishing wild Coho salmon in the sloughs and rivers of the Copper River Delta. This was my 4th year in the area and it never ceases to amaze me. We got chased out of one of our favorite spots by a big sow grizzley bear and a year old cub. I had to fire my .44 mag in the air at close range to get momma bear to back off. All the fish were caught on the fly. This was an odd year in that all of the fish were about 2 pounds larger (about 12 pounds) than previous year averages, but there were fewer of them. The bears give me the willies but we'll be back next year.

2 fish pictures and a background shot---

Nice boat you got there, Yooper. You will have your hands full if you get muiltiple hook-ups. We fish up to 7 lines while trolling. Doubles are easy but more than once had 4 hook-ups at once. Not fun.

Looks like it's getting cold up there.

BTW, Nice fish.
