Bump with this pic of a king salmon my friend caught in the Carp River, spring 2005. We don't have a spring king run here, at least we're not supposed to. The fish turned out to be a female, full of spawn. We felt bad for killing it. We may have nixed our future spring king run!

March on the Cali Delta. We had to drive 14 hours instead of 8 hours to get there but it was worth it. Had to chain up the truck and trailer to go over f n Donner pass!

Here's a pic of a fish from the lakes that we fly over all the time right around Baghdad (don't know these guys). I definitely plan to take a little RnR down at Camp Victory to try my hand at catching one of these things.
Closest thing to good fishing I'll prolly see for a good year or so.

"But Mr Card eventually surfaced 50ft behind the boat. 'Once we got Ian up, I cut the fish loose,' said his father. 'My main concern was not the tournament."
So, if Ian hadn't of surfaced they would have tried to land the marlin? (To get Ian off the bill of course) Perhaps they could have won the tournament at the same time. I guess if it was a release tournament the could count that fish because Ian touched the leader! I have fished some release tournoments. Our technique usually had me hanging off the bow pulpit, legs locked around the stansion, reaching for the leader, at speed. I never worried about the marlin spearing me, more about the props mincing me when I fell over!

Anyway, went fishing yesterday morning at a friend's on the Delaware. They had a HUGE flood last month, so the bottom/banks had been rearranged a bit since I was last there. I started with a small floating/diving frog lure and got an immediate hit, but it spit the lure. Fished around a bit, found a deep channel, and then hooked up with a 14" smallmouth. It jumped a few times, then decided to go deep, downriver, taking out some line. It was one strong mofo, for its size. I swear, river bass are a different species, or maybe they just know how to use the currents to make themselves seem stronger. Anyway, I brought it back to camp to cook up, it was still wriggling like mad when I showed it to the kids.
Didn't have the camera, didn't think to take a pic until after it was partially eaten. I'll post a pic once I'm home tonight. __________________ 87 FJ60 Banks are for suckahs! ![]() |

Jman - you reminded me... and this thread does belong at the top.

the best fish I caught when I was trout fishing in North Georgia a couple of years ago was a red eyed bass... different names for different ppl for this fish. Around where I live they call it a Suwannee Bass (species of smallmouth). Anyhoo... he came up and busted a dry and treated me like a red headed stepchild. He ran up and down through several pools (bottom slicker than seal snot)... Since I didn't expect anything bigger than about a 12" bow and the 'river' was tight and overgrown I was using a light 6' # 3 fly rod. He worked it out, and like you say was a different species of bass. __________________ SR+ steven d philbrick srplus@hotmail.com '86FJ60 - 'BlueBird' . '69 fj40 SOA - 'Piney Woods Rooter' . Smallmouth on light tackle is one of my favorite fishing experiences. I caught a 17 1/2" one last Wednesday night right near my dock. I walked out on the dock to talk to my kids, and just grabbed a rod for a few casts. It was about 10pm and dark, and on the second cast I hooked the ladder on my swim raft, about 50 feet out, so I grabbed a kayak and went out and unhooked my lure from the ladder, then stayed out there to cast to a few well known honey spots and hooked this beast. It pulled me around in the kayak for about 5 minutes, which was pretty kewl, especially in the dark. Since this was impromptu fishing, I wasn't prepared with my camera and didn't want to tire him out too much, so I just released him (I release all BIG fish when fishing my own lake, to be caught again another day or make more big fish for the future - large, mature fish are the most efficient breeders...).
