This Is How Real Men Fish

I don't know if you are familiar with "noodling", but it is the term for the way Oklahoma guys catch their fish. These guys wade out into the river and feel for holes or logs on the river floor. When they find a catfish hole, they stick their hands in there wiggle their fingers, the cats latch on and the 'idiots' pull out these monsters. Many people lose their lives each year because of this. Some fish are so big they literally pull the 'idiot' under. Snapping turtles and snakes claim their fair share of rednecks too. Here are some pictures of what they come out with. Think about these monsters the next time you order a catfish dinner!

Look for the documentary called "Okie Noodling." It is a must see! BTW I cut and pasted the above text. For all you Okies, I am from there as well.

Thanks for saving me the work of having to dig up this dusty thread!

Just got back from Candlewood Lake in CT. Yesterday was golden: hooked up without about a dozen brown trout, kept six of them, including one nice, fat 18" beauty. Today, not so much: it rained most of the morning, only got two hits--one that spit the alewife back out after hanging on for a minute or two, and one that took my frickin' rod up and over the railing while I was re-baiting another rod. By the time I whipped the wallet and keys out of my pockets, the rod and been dragged down and away, out of sight, in about 35 feet of water. Since my wife was out of town with the kids, it would have been much worse if I had lost the house/car keys or my wallet, so I don't regret my hesitation. The rod/reel combo was decent, about $100 worth of equipment, but I'm more pissed off about losing the fish. About 20 minutes later, a boat nearby hooked up with another 18" brownie, and when they landed it, well, what do you know, it had a line attached to it, but no rod. Fucker. At least that fish is dead now.

Good times.

Kewl pics Jim! I love smallmouth - I can't decide if I like them, brook trout, or steelhead the best..

Yeah, um, Jim--like that last one, that's your bait, right? Gotta love the hutspah that small bass have.

FSUSteve--as I was taking the crap out of my pockets and contemplating the dive, I was thinking of you and your cell phones.

It's great when a family of four demolishes a 3+ lb. grilled brown trout. My son, who won't eat a lot of things, wanted to know if he could eat the head.

Got a bunch of sandwich-sized fish in the freezer, too.

Yes, I believe I am indeed a FL redneck.

Yooper: I agree, smallmouths are a lot of fun, especially on light tackle/artificials.

Jman: I actually caught that small bass on that Rapala. The lure was as long as the catch.

just got back from the Kootenays...fishing was slow, but the fish were all rockets.

Nice fat little brook trout caught on what we call the "Pornomid" (because it's a chironamid tied with VHS tape for the body ):

Headshot of the typical rainbow of the trip...

One of the better fish of the trip...this one launched itself four feet into the air:

All in all a relaxing few days.
