For over night fishing trips I like to take my old chev pickup and a 8' camper, this way you can often camp very close to the fishing and experience nature and also have more comfort than a tent, and a "little" more safety from bears

If you guys need help on deciding where to fish I can point you in the right direction....

The wahoo is a very fast fish but not the fastest. I think the sailfish is regarded as the fastest followed by the mako shark.

Tuna and wahoo are about the best eating there is. Both are great raw, sashimi style with some soy and wasabi. Grilled, blackened and sauteed are all good ways to make them too.

Wahoo have a really good first run and then you can whip them with constant pressure and reeling like mad. They are adept at cutting the line (usually right at the swivel) due to their sharp teeth and the zig zag way they feed.

Tuna fight like there's no tomorrow all the way to the gaff. They are pure muscle and use their bodies to angle into the current and create extra drag. They don't give up. Some say it's the hardest fighting fish in the world, pound for pound.

As fishermen, we all know that's a statement open for debate with lots of different claims.

I always thought the Wahoo was the fastest swimming fish. I don't have any documentation, and I'm too lazy to research it. Sails are damn fast, too!

When we target Wahoos, we troll high speed at 8 to 12 knots. Thats pretty damn fast for a fish to nail. They are really predator/ambush creatures. Fun to catch and great to eat any way that Cruiser4life desctibed above.

I'd be fast, too, if I were followed by a mako shark.

I've heard different things and curiosity got the best of me, so I checked it out. I am sure there are other sources with different info, but this is the first I came across:

Fastest Fish:
Sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus: 68.18 mph
Mako Shark, Isurus oxyrinchus: 60 mph
Marlin, Tetrapturus sp. 50 mph
Wahoo, Acanthocybium solandri 48.5 mph
Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus thynnus 43.4 mph
Blue Shark, Prionace glauca 43 mph
Bonefish, Albula vulpes 40 mph
Swordfish, Xiphius gladius 40 mph

Like you said, all damn fast!!

I had no idea they were that fast.

I went mako fishing once, hooked into a couple, 250 and 450 lbs., seeing them jump was intense, seeing them jump practically into the boat was too intense.

Got both up to the boat, couldn't land either one, gaff wasn't sharp enough and no bangstick.

Sounds awesome! Never caught a mako.

We've caught some big sharks here and from my experience, a bangstick doesn't do much to a 400+ lb shark.

We hit a 12 foot hammerhead about 4 times and it was still thrashing the crap out of the side of the boat. Cut the leader and the thing sped away like nothing happened.

Man, I am jealous!

Contrary to what my pics show, trout fishing is what I do most. Went all 5 weekends in March and going again this weekend.

Like I said before, Kamloops is the mecca. I will get there at some point!!!

Gold Boy posted a pic in another thread of a guy throwing a cast net. I have 10' and 8' nets and rely pretty heavily on these for bait aquisition. I'm about 50/50 between live and artificial bait. Just wondering how many guys throw, I'm not even sure if it's all that common outside of the Gulf Coast/Keys...

I drop one of these into the creek that is the inlet for my lake. I can usually catch enough bait for the weekend (a dozen or two minnows) in about an hour...

I would like to learn to throw, though. We do get big schools of bait in the shallows and a throw net would work okay.

Where I fish, they would be of little use, way too shallow for those. Most of my inshore is less than 2' deep. We generally use flats boats for this and bay boats outside. Capt. Jim's coast is a whole nother ballgame.

This is the dam in front of my house. Lots of flatheads, crappie and walleye.

No fish tonight, just a water snake eating a lamprey....

it's a good boat to drink beer on also. I'm an inshore junkie, shell banks, mud flats. You might of noticed that I have not posted any picks of fish. I'll go to a shell bank back in a salt water creek drop anchor and start opening beers. I've caught a few, but getting there is where I have fun. I'm a good guide for someone that wants to fish off my boat.

I've got two, 6 and 8 footers. Also use Sabiki rigs. Started using pinfish traps for bait in the keys.

I used to love to come to the ballpark. Now I hate it.
Every day becomes a little tougher because of all this.
Writers, tape recorders, microphones, cameras, questions
and more questions. Roger Maris lost his hair the season
he hit sixty-one. I still have all my hair, but when it's over,
I'm going home to Mobile and fish for a long time.

Here in QLD we use cast nets a fair bit for collecting bait and for catching prawns. I have a 10' net which has had a hard life. It's just a cheap nylon net because it quite often gets thrown over oyster encrusted mangrove roots to catch that last couple of poddy mullet hiding up in the back of the snag.
