Izaak Walton

Fishing friends - Please, please get a copy of the complete angler by Izaak Walton. its a hoot to read, its all in old English, but you can still understand it, it is a master peace of fishing/English literature.

Good company and good discourse are the very sinews of virtue.
Izaak Walton

"Angling may be said to be so like the mathematics, that it can never be fully learnt." -Izaak Walton 1653

1. The hook went straight through my nostril. We were in an overloaded canoe going down the Pearl river when we stopped to answer natures call on a sandbar. The guy in front of me forgot to secure his hook. When he stepped out his foot caught the rod, flipped it up and made a perfect snag of my nose with live minnow still dangling. After the photo op we snipped the barb with a leatherman, pulled the shaft and continued on our merry way.

I have a really old one, printed in 1913, that my retina professor gave me as a graduation gift when I finished my ophthalmology residency. It's a treasure for sure...

That was a nice gift, they must of liked you.

Sean

I get a kick out of the fact that Izaak got the same joy, as we are getting out of fishing. The way he thinks is so refreshing as well. He could of been a good buddy for us all.

Someone should make a film about Izaak Walton.

Have any of you ever read "The River Why"? Walton is featured in it quite prominently. I can't remember the author.

Yooper,

Based on your prior avatars, Here's one for you. A hogfish.

Excellent eating and rarely caught on hook and line. We always spear 'em.

Damn, I obviously haven't been keeping up to date on Mud since being out of town. Don't know how I missed this thread. Man, I could fill up pages on this one. Something near and dear to my heart.

To start it off, a nice bounty of hogfish like in Capt. Jim's post. Off Walker's Cay a few years back. Always go for a week to harvest lobster but hogs make mighty fine eating and if they are around, we lock and load!!!

Awesome thread, kudos!
