Question Fav self protection ammo

I know you guys have mentioned ammo in other threads...

What is your favorite self protection ammo currently and why? I need something for the wife's 9mm and I was thinking Federal Hydrashoks but is there something better?

Hydra's have been the standby for a long time. However...that said they are old technology. They are decent bullets.....but I would not bet my life on them.

To me....the Winchester Silver Tip Personal Defense rounds are the top of the barrel. I also like the Corbon bullets. There is a company called Double Tap...and they make fine ammo as well.

Dont let the caliber junkies worry you about the 9. I can vouch for the pain it causes personally.

I use Remington .177 hollow point ... Forgot the name cause I used the can they came in to catch oil and then chucked it.

These rounds are great for squirle attacks around the homestead. I hate those bastards.

Hornady TAP are nice. I want to try out those new Federals with the silicone in the HP cavity - that might be my go to round for the HK94 when the proverbial hits the fan and the apocalypse comes. Just haven't figured out a good way to test them yet...

My kimber feeds stars just fine.

Pig is the closest to human. Ballistic gelatin works well too.....but gets kinda spendy for a citizen to do a convincing enough test. Ive dabbled in it.

15-20 rounds of .308 Ball ammo has worked on everything I have encountered.

I've considered buying a big ham hock or something. If I had a pig farm I'd be set!

It wil penetrate unless you hit the shoulder directly. Then its 50x50. The real bitch isnt going in.......its if you live long enough to feel it come back out. The flower effect of these bullets makes it somewhat like a treble hook. Ask me how i know.......

So, how do you guys think the Hydra's and silvertips stack up against Black Talons?

Corbon's for just about everything.

Remington Golden Sabre performs well too.

In my .45 I use 230 gr. rounds in the winter to help penetrate heavy clothing, then switch to 165's in the summer.

There are a lot of good personal defense rounds out there. If you carry, take the time to try several. You'll find that some will group better than others (out of your particular gun). Also, different rounds vary greatly in the amount of "muzzle flash" they produce...which can be a concern in low light conditions.

I've tried most everything out there, and settled on the Corbon's.

The ones I tried wadded in heavy cotton. Patterned extrordinarily well though.

Well stinky.....the nice scar on my shoulder blade and the hospital bill im still paying off seems to be testament.

Black Talons are a superb bullet. No better than a Corbon or a Silver Tip to me.......the hype that surrounded them is what the price is. Notoriaty is a bitch.

No one mentioned Black talons. I know they were outlawed but if you know the right people they can still be had and you wanted the best protection ammo right.

Black Talons are not "outlawed"--they went out of production by that name and were renamed Winchester SXT back a few years ago. There may be some states that don't allow them; however, those are states that don't allow hollowpoints of any variety. Hell, for the longest time, NYPD officers had to carry FMJ ball ammo--now THAT'S stupid and just plain not safe for the officers.

Remington Golden Sabre are very good rounds. I have nothing bad to say about Federal Hydrashock either. Silvertips are a good bet--especially in the smaller autos; however, my favorite round across the board is CorBon. I have not found a load of theirs that is ineffective. It's good stuff and they get my money. At work I have to carry the Golden Sabre; however, when my choice is in play, I only carry CorBon.

I don't buy the Glaser or other frangible ammo. To me, I am responsible for the rounds that I fire and I don't spray rounds--I believe in hitting the target. I buy ammo that gets the job done in the target and I don't believe the frangibles out there reliably do that. Having said that, there is work being done using sintered metal rounds that offers promise beyond what current frangibles offer. This is intriguing to me but not yet in my gun. We'll see.
