I have a permit, but all that does it let you take home a handgun the same day.........IF the NICS system says Proceed, if it say Delay, then you must wait for the call from NICS or 5 working days........if it says Denied........ya gotta start taking to the FBI.
I beleive you are wrong, the instant background check thru NICS is required everyplace in the US regardless or permit or not, now being a cop might get around that some way, but for a normal citizen.....EVERYONE get the background check...unless private sales or gun shows. and no it doesn't ever end. don't know what "system" we use around here, but we can take our weapon(s) home the day it's paid for.
they use a phone check using your SS#, normally takes less then 5 minutes and costs 5 bucks. __________________ it's only metal, we can out think it. 77-fj40 20th anniversary edition 87-fj60 216K mile DDer 93-fzj80 mall crawler toyota material distribution center. your source for Factory Service Manuals. they're alot cheaper than you think. 1-800-622-2033 |

Here you can get a handgun permit....which is basically just the 4473 form filled out at the local cop shop. Then they mail it to you, and you get to skip the phone call. Still have to fill out the paperwork, but dont have to wait for the dork behind the counter.

States can be more restrictive than the Federal laws but not less. What sky is talking about I think is just doing the NICS check at a different time - it happens when you apply for the permit, and the permit is the proof that the check was okay. Fulfills the federal requirement. In Michigan, I have to get a state pistol permit to buy any handgun - I have to go to the police station, take a short written safety test, and pay $5 for the notary service. They give me the permit, which is good for 7 days; I have to buy the handgun during those 7 days, still have to do the instant check in the store, then I have to bring the weapon back to the police for a safety inspection. Of course it then also becomes registered locally. This is only for handguns. The other MI law that's kind of a PITA is that no weapon can be sold without a trigger lock. When I called to pickup my HK 94, my FFL guy said he was out of trigger locks, so since I was in a hurry doing this on my lunch break, I went home and got one and gave it to him so he could include it with my rifle, then we both signed a state form that says the gun left his premises with a trigger lock. __________________ If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate. Love all the gun laws they do such a great job. You guys know all the bad guys get their back ground checks, and if the fail a check they never try to steral a gun. I feel so safe now that the politicians are keeping me safe. I know there is Big Bro watching my back, why would I ever need to carry a 45cal? ((SARCASM))) We do not learn from history...Hey how about someone from the board running for office?

Here in Texas, issuance and possession of the CHL establishes that I have already gone through the NICS check and allows purchase of weapons with the mere completion of the BATF form. No wait, no check--cash/credit & carry. Even police officers don't get to do that in this state--just folks with CHL's. This is because once you are a police officer, you don't undergo another background check if you stay with the same employer--even 10, 15, 20 years later; however, with a CHL, you get checked prior to issuance and with each renewal (presently 4 years, but soon to be 5 years, I believe).
The one exception for police officers in Texas is if they have a TCLEOSE license showing an issuance date that is less than five years old. In that instance, it is accepted as having gone through NICS background check within the requisite period and is treated similarly to a CHL-holder. __________________ Sparkplugs are Irrelevant. 1976 HJ-45; 1984 BJ-42; 1988 BJ-73; & 1993 KZJ-70 Quote:

that make alot of sense.........wish WA did the same, I got the permit, pass the background check, but each and everytime you buy a gun you must be run thru thru the NICS system again........kinda a crap shoot if you get a Proceed or Delay.....I know alot of cops that get Delayed everytime........kinda crazy IMOP

Washington apparently chooses to go further than the Federal Law demands. Texas is well-within the law the way it proceeds. Many, many states are stricter than the feds require. So, when you coming to Texas for some "shopping"? LOL

Cops frequently get delayed because some part of their record may be restricted. That raises a red flag. Same thing with my buddy who was in the military. He has me buy all his guns for him. Its just easier that way. Otherwise it ALWAYS gets delayed.
