burris on a 30 30...
im thinking about tossing one on my 30/30 for hunting black bear in laurel around ridgeway pa.
any opinions on one? never used one.
at some point someone is going to say a 30/30 isnt big enough, im sure. im more interested in thoughts on the sight, but ill entertain that discussion too. (being as i wont really have a choice.)

What power? What would a typical shooting distance be for where you are? The .30-30 is only good (IMHO) for about 100 yds on a blackie, so I'd recommend a 4X fixed. I have 3 Burris scopes and they are all excellent.

For close in work consider one of thier tacticool 1.5-5x models. My second choice would be a red dot/holo sight. Burris is one of the best values in a quality scope.

I love the Hornady Leverevolution rounds in my 30-30. They do wonders for the ballistics. That being said, I carry my as a dark timbers rifle, so I'm open sights. Therefore, I'm only good to 100yds, but the rounds are good to 200, especially on those little East Coast black bears. Cabelas actually makes a low powered scope for the 30-30 shooting the Leverevolution with a distance calculated reticle. If I was gonna scope mine, that's where I'd go. My .02.

theres not a 100 yard shot in the area. its thick where im going, and i just took off a 30yo 4x scope last year. im looking for fast acquisition. as fast as possible outside of iron sights, with about 2x magnification.
i was thinking of getting one of theses with a holo sight..
Marlin Model 1895M in 450 Marlin
but... im not sure what else id use that for outside of bears.
i reaaaaaaly like that though.

A .45-70 is on my wants list, too.
I have a Burris fastfire piggybacked on a Burris XTR14 on an AR-15, it's very nice. Superfast target acquisition, faster than open sights even. Check it out.
Burris FastFire™
One comment. My .30-30 is a top eject, so I wonder if there's issues related to mounting a fastfire or scope on mine????? Anyone??

I have a scope on a 30-30 I won at a banquet. It needs an offset hammer setup. I have a 450 marlin, I had to add a recoil pad and mercury stock insert, to tame the recoil. I think that caliber will handle anything in N.A. It is entertaining shooting jackrabbits with it.

Those ballistics are real. I had to move my irons around quite a bit when I swapped rounds a few years ago.
As to the top eject, it depends on your model year. I think the pre 1984s had true top eject. Mine does as it's a 1952. After that they have a angle eject. If it's a true top eject, then you've got two options for scopes. Side mount or foremount. With the foremount, you basically mount a pistol scope where the rear sight is located. Quick acquisition, low magnification, perfect for a 30-30.

The scope that worked the best for me on a lever gun (Marlin 45-70) was an old Leupold M8 fixed 3x. Bought it used for $40. Very fast handling in brush, and surprisingly bright.

I'm not sure what model year mine is. It's a Win Model 94, serial # 232540X. A quick Google search for info doesn't get me much. Any ideas?
I haven't shot it since last year, but seem to remember it is a true top eject. I got the gun in a swap from a buddy of mine. Swapped him two ancient recurve bows, with arrows and broadheads. I think I got the better deal.

According to these guys ( Winchester Model 1894/94 Dates of Manufacture):
"Your Wichester 94 was manufactured after 1982."
So good news if yer looking to scope it.

I'm leaning towards a Burris Fastfire or similar holographic.
