Will a whole elk fit in a FJ-60?
Yes, but if you want to close the tailgate, you'll have the rear hooves on your windshield

Good thing you did not shoot a full size adult Bull Elk otherwise you would have had to quartered it and used the roof rack as well.
LOL
Congrats!

True!!!
505 - why didn't you knuckle him first? He'd fit a little better that way. Nice custom shock strut stops.

Believe me, I tried to get a bigger one. The big boys were just too elusive on this hunt. Ate some backstrap steaks last night that were mighty tender, though. This little guy wasn't all rutty and gnarly like those big bulls get.

Lose the hooves, and they fit fine. I prefer to quarter them and bone out the carcass in the field, then they fit with the back seat up.
Nice Elk.

Can't find any pics of them, but my grandparents had several whole elk in 40's in Colorado. However, here's one I was sent in an email last year........in a CJ-5.

Thanks for the props, guys. This was a long season and I'm grateful to have meat in the freezer for the winter.
Usually my wife will bug me to drive the 60 instead of her car. Not this week. She got one whiff of the interior and gave me the stinkeye.
I only have one more redneck picture, just so everyone knows I was legal retrieving my game off road in the national forest. I'm not a quad guy, but my buddy brought his along for this hunt.

Nice job...
I wish I would have cubed my elk steak. Even my backstrap is tough. I'll be cubing it after it thaws for sure now.

OK, I have to ask, because it doesn't look like the ATV is on a designated trail or road. What does the NFs travel plan for that area say? Just because you can drive an ATV to it, doesn't necessarily make it legal.

Under the current regs, licensed big game hunters are basically legal if the weather is dry and you don't tear the hell out of the landscape or cultural sites. Currently there is no limit on distance from the road. This is in the Gila NF, one of the few in NM that allows any MBGR. The proposed travel plan limits off road MBGR to one mile from a designated open FS road.
We took the quad in about 500 yards, it was much lower impact than a full size truck would have been, but that also would have been legal.
You and I are probably on the same page as far as quads and off road travel goes. Like I said before, I'm not a quad guy. It turned out to be a useful tool in my situation. There isn't anything that will piss me off faster than hiking 8 or 10 miles and finding fresh wheeler tracks.

Very good, but what is MBGR? I'm glad you know the regs there. Rules/Regs vary from place to place (as most hunters know)......I've seen everything from full OHV use to no OHV use (except onroad), to OHV use specifically for big game retrieval ONLY.
Yes, there's nothing worse than hiking your keister off for several hours just to hear someone on an ATV/motorcycly coming in that has breached a closure. To make things even worse, I hate it when they argue with me about the legality of it.

I'm with you on that too. Hike to the top of a mountain. You know the one that you have been hunting since you where 12. Man where are the deer. Look down and there is an ATV freeway. And on the highest peak is an overweight family of 5 sitting on Atv's. **** I get pissed!

Motorized Big Game Retrieval.
We advocate the Rocky Mountain Tuneup around these parts. I know of a quad in the wilderness with a bullet hole in the block.
NM has new regs requiring license plates, makes it easier to get the clowns ticketed. Now if the law actually had some teeth, like seizure, they wouldn't be in the areas they aren't supposed to be.

I am for retrieval with atv. It keeps a lot of people from wasting animals. Hunters should keep them on the roads while hunting. USFS is changing the management plan around here. I am against it because they are shutting roads down that have been here before the Forest service existed. They need to just ticket people that blaze new roads without a permit.

MBGR......copy. I've considered it on more than one occasion.

Unless there are environmental issues (such as Grizzly Bear Core Habitat), I would agree with you. Unfortunately, those people who waste their harvested animals should not be hunting where they are. If they can't retrieve it, they should not be shooting there. ATVs are a great tool when used appropriately, very similar to our Cruisers. Unfortunately, there's the 5% club that screws it up for everyone.
If you have info about someone blazing new roads on NFS lands, call the Patrol Captain or District Law Enforcement Officer on that National Forest. They'd love to hear from you.
