Hunting without shooting?
I'll start off by saying that I'm ALL for hunting AND shooting.
My question revolves around the frustration of not getting drawn for elk or deer and trying to still enjoy the fun of the hunt.
1. Does anyone go out just looking to find animals, using the same techniques they use for hunting and just get as close as they can?
2. If you can get really close, is it legal to "thump" them with a non-lethal for big game, blunt tipped arrow like those made for small game? Kind of a catch and release game, like we do with fish.
This may be crazy talk, let me know. Obviously, getting drawn would be better, but this may be a good way to lengthen the season, while honing skills in preparation for the chance to shoot one for real.

I do it all the time. With a camera and camcorder. I think using a blunt arrow is not right. You are injuring that animal if you are doing it. I think you just need to wait for the tag like everyone else. It took me 18 years to draw a Nevada Elk tag.

Bingo..
Generally speaking (as state laws govern most F&G, so they differ in every state), engaging them with a non-lethal device could be construed as harassment, which is illegal in one way or another under most F&G laws... And since you wouldn't have the tag to legally pursue the game you are harassing, I bet most F&G LE would frown on it... Just my professional opinion, but I'm not in enforcement.

I agree w/ the above, my opinion is that G&F would view is as harassment. (the blunt arrow that is) Typical 'nature viewing' with a camera is a long-standing pastime that I've not heard being treated as anything other than acceptable.
Do you have any critters with year-round seasons you can hunt for the practice?

I've actually heard of animals being killed with blunts, so DON'T RISK IT. As mentioned above, it is a form of harassment and will get you a coupon (if not a ride).

"Counting coupe" on big game is harrassment and would be written up by OSP as such. We are fortunate to be able to buy OTC deer and elk tags here. I would suggest a camera to do your shooting with.

A camera is one option. And it's actually easier when you do it in the off season, as the animals are not conditioned to man hunting them in the fall.
I don't get much time for deer season, and none for elk. The simple fact is you have to put in enough time to be productive. That's why I enjoy coyote, varmint and small game hunting a lot more. It's no replacement for venison, but the success ratio is vastly higher.

I scout most of the year to hone my knowledge of the game. I'll take my camera to capture the moment.
I'm fortunate to hunt in a state with over the counter tags.

Thanks for the info guys.
I read the harassment part of the field guide and figured that the consensus on this board would be the answer.
Now, I need to get out more and work it a little.
Thanks again,
TR

"dad" only got one or two in the last probably 15 times of hunting. he had a lot of great photos tho. said he'd get up there and just feel that it was too good of an animal and he'd just sit and watch it for a while.

I have been oding it with quail lately. The birds have been taking a beating the past few years. I still like to get out there and work the dogs. I will shoot away from the covey as they rise, mainly to let the dogs know they did a good job.

I've wondered about "catch and release" hunting with a paintball gun but I find there are always hunting opportunities even (like this year) when I don't get drawn for Mule Deer or Moose. I'll hunt hard for a good whitetail and if I get him while there is still season left I'll hunt birds or coyotes depending on conditions.
