Channel cats

Never went catfishing before but promissed I'd take my son out tomorrow night for a few hours. Place we're going to is the D&R Canal which in addition to bass supposedly has decent channel cats. What bait, what hook size, techniques and any other info?

something dead, the longer the better. cut bait is cool to. something that oily, like shad. or if you feel like cheating, some kind of stink bait bought in a store. limburger cheese makes a wicked cheese ball and a fine snack, for everybody involved.
you want some hooks, even teh little ones are stronger and the larger samples can straighten hooks. so heavier tackle is in order all the way around. 20-50# line.
you want your junk on the bottom and yuo want it to stay there. lob and wait is the tactic.
don't nod off or you'll be driving home with a few less rods.
hooking a bell or ringer on teh line in front of the reel is an option. leave teh action open or free. take some liter tackle for teh bass while you wait.

Black licorice (ansin?) is outlawed in most states for catfishing.

Just helping you out here.

All yuu need is an old pair of tennis shoes and a pair of swim trunks. Go noodling. Feel around under logs, on the banks, whatever until you find one and then grab it!

Let me say the majority of my catfish have been caught on a simple rod reel combo with simple hooks, and 20 lb test line. The bait? Nightcrawlers. Another good bait that I have caught many catfish on is hot dogs, uncooked cut into pieces about an inch long.

Chicken Liver works good too.

If it is dead, nearly dead, smells dead, acts dead, and tastes bad(good to catfish) then a channel cat will bite it, and bite it frequently.

Shad
Chicken liver
Shrimp

Anchovies

That is why it is outlawed in some states. Genreally speaking, any state that borders the Mississippi River.

I'm not sure my state issued fishing regulation book says anything about it in MO.

Thanks guys. I'll post up some pics later. We used hot dog on a 1/0 Octopus hook and caught 3 last night. My 6-1/2 yr old was so jacked up. Ranged from 3lbs to just over 5 to 7-1/2lbs.

Hmm, I didn't expect you to take the hotdog advice. My first catfish trip was with hotdog and I caught a ten pounder. Memories......are great.

Thats why we always used them. They were always in our freezer so we would just thaw them and use as bait. Occasionaly we would set eating a cold hotdog waiting for the fish to bite.

I have never heard of this before. Nor can I find any reference ion the web. So I called my local Fish and Game office and the enforcement officer who I talked to almost busted a gut laughing and said that he has never heard of it.

Can you please give me a reference so that I can call him back?

Same here. I can't figure out why it would be illegal. I googled it and came up with all kinds of info on anise and why it's a great fish bait, but nothing about it being illegal.

I think it dates back to when people used to go "jugging" and run trot lines for catfish. As with other laws, it may still be on the books in some states.
