I've heard those flat backs have some weight on them due to beefing up the rear to support a motor.

my bud has one, 10', plastic shell, flat back canoe only holds a 3.5 outboard, which weighs like 25lbs. It'll run 15mph or so. The canoe can't weigh 40lbs. empty.

no, I was trying to remember if I saw one. He's got my 3.5 outboard on it, so when I go retrieve it, I'll check. I almost bought it first, pretty badass for what it is.

See if you can find one of these. Coleman - Scanoe DLX-
I used to have one. I have hunted ducks out of it with no problems as they are super stable. You can usually find older ones really cheap. I sold mine for $300 Slap a small outboard on there and you are set. __________________ Quote:

I don't think that the older ones were that heavy. They did not have a liner. Instead they were just a plastic shell covering an exposed aluminum frame.

Have you thought about one of these?
The Creek Company: Pontoon Boats, Float Tubes, Tackle Bags, Flyfishing Accessories I traded up from my float tube to a cat several years ago and they are super steady and I have seen people mount an electric trolling motor on them. __________________ Quote:

BTW: You can put a trolling motor on any canoe. You might have to cut a block of wood to the shape of the inside of the hull, but you can hang it off the side to one end. I have an old AL Smoker Craft that I do this with. That canoe is nearly 40 and still going strong. Over the years I've pounded out many dents left in it by river rocks. On the other hand I wouldn't want to lift it on top of a truck very often. On Canoes, lake canoes are thin and tippy, river running canoes are wide and stable. I own a river canoe. __________________ When change isn't enough. Vote CHAOS party. You know you can't resist. |

Just traded my canoe in for one of these... fully outfitted for fishing. Put a trolling motor on. Very nice. Can fly fish standing without any typical "canoe wobble". I use it on a river and so far it's been fantastic. My dog can jump out and climb back in without worrying about tipping the thing over. Never would have tried to bring her in my canoe.
Not cheap though. Even trade for a very nice Old Towne Canoe. I do have a canoe motor mount from Old Town for sale if anyone's interested. New $120... sell for $50. Like new. Wilderness systems Tarpon 120 or 140 would be perfect. I have one, and its rigged for fishing. It's a sit on top, with large tank well in the back. Sit on tops mean much easier access, on and off, and allow you to hang your legs off the side to maintain balance, position and drift. Two scotty flush mount rod holders behind the seat allows trolling or multiple rods, and two scotty surface mount brackets in the cockpit (on preformed mounts) allow for a rod, or any number of accessory mounts. Mine weighs about 75 lbs, and i can get it off and on my 80 series solo without too much grief.
You could probably get a wilderness systems pamlico 120 and do well. Dont bother getting the pamlico 100 or any boat under 10ft. They are very inefficient, and dont have storage room. Longer boats track better for longer distance paddling, shorter boats maneuver a bit better, but can bring the suckage sometimes. I bought my then 8 month old tarpon at a rental place at the end of their season. It had been in the water less than 5 times durin the season. It was much cheaper than buyin a new one (less than 50% of retail), and it already has the virginal scratches that everyone freaks out about. Mine is good for class1-2 whitewater, small creeks, rivers, lakes, salt marshes and open ocean (its seen all of them). Another option is made by native watercraft (the dude used to own wilderness systems). Native Watercraft I'd love to have a native ultimate 14.5 solo/tandem. They have what amounts to lawn chair seating, and the boat is convertible from single to tandem. it has a tunnel hull, so its very stable, and very shallow draft. It has a drop down skeg for longer distances and straighter tracking, and is stable enough for even fsusteve to stand up and fish from. The foot pads(not pegs) are the size of a 70s foot gas pedal....very comfortable. you may be able to find one used for a reasonable price. Ive paddled one, and would love to have one. If i didnt have my tarpon 140, id have one of them. check out Kayak Fishing Stuff for tons of information. the forums there are great __________________ 97 LX-450, 119k, Dual Batteries, Pin7/CDL mod, Slee harness/HIR's, LED's inside, no factory roof rack, some other homebrew mods, Airlift helper bags, and 285/75/16 geolander II's. |

Canoe
I would get a canoe. A flat stern would be pretty cool.
I just bought a Mad River 14TT canoe. This is what we do with our kayaks around here. JR __________________ 76 FJ40 CHEVY 350/SM465/NP205 DANA 60/14 BOLT 5.13 gears 44" BOGGERS on 32 bolt beadlocks |
