Help me pick a youth shotgun
Heading a new direction for my 5 ft tall 12yo's birthday. Ditching the gaming console idea and looking at youth shotguns today.
I need help choosing between the two following 20 ga. candidates: Charles Daly VR-MC youth, or one of these Mossy's Mossberg 500 Super bantam or 505 youth all-purpose field. This will be his 1st personal shotgun, the pull is too long on the 20 ga single and 12 ga Mossy pump he's shot before. This is for 90% skeet/trap and perhaps a little dove and quail once the boy can hit the broad-side of a barn. I'll have to admit never hearing about the Daly, and wonder about the Mossy being a Walmart-quality gun. Both are within $10, so price is def. a non-issue. I want to be able to have the gun grow with my boy until he can hand it down to his 4 yo little bro. Care to fire off any suggestions from experience?

My first gun was a Remington 870 express and I still have it, and shoot it all the time. I think they make a youth model, If you are set on those two choices I would go with the mossberg. just my .02

SPAS-12? No?
Second on the 870, they do make a youth gun, prolly available through Wally World for cheap. For your two, I only know the Daly for their 1911 clone, but it's good quality. Mossberg's a good gun, they've always seemed clunky to me in their action, but functional. __________________ Cory Fillmore TLCA Western Individual Representative 99 UZJ 100 Series Wheels FOR SALE-CLICK HERE |

From what little I know, the SPAS-12 would be heavy for a 12 yo to field all day.
The Mossy would have been a nice companion for the older 12 ga Mossberg trombone, but I'm a sucker for the lesser-known products 8 of 10 times. The Daly has had great reviews since intro, was light, and Daly will fit a regular sized stock for free whenever I ask for it. It seems to be quite the 870 clone, which I hope means they copied most of what makes the 870 nice. The action feels nice for a brand-new gun. Their 12 ga auto at $399 would make for a nice inexpensive gun for me later. I think my boy will flip when he sees it in 2 weeks. ![]() Edit: Here's the Daly in black, ours is Realtree Hardwood. __________________ ="Are you gonna sit there on that friggin computer all day or what?"The desert dwellin, roadrunner chasin, soooper-genius! Remington 1100 Youth
A friend of mine bought a Remington 1100 Youth for his son. In my mind it is perfect for that age group except it is semi-auto but for skeet/trap if you only load 2 shells that isn't a problem.
With the gas operation the 1100 shoots very soft and takes a lot of the pain out of shooting. |

My son is 11 and is on his second year with the Moss bantam. It is a great gun. Fits him perfect. By next year i will add back in the removable piece on the stock. He has kill turkey, dove, quail, and skeet with it. not to mention rabbits and armadillo's also. I would get it over anything out there in that price range. If money is no object then i would move to the benelli but for under 300, camo , and convertable it is a steal. I personally do not like 870's. loose and loud when moving around. I know they have sold a lot but it is strickly a price point gun. Several of my turkey hunting buddy's got one the firts time they saw my son's gun.

Thanks for the opinions. I already made the purchase, see #4 above. As far as fitting him when he grows, no spacer is used. Charles Daly will fit a longer ('bout 1 1/2" or so) stock for free anytime until 2015.
