I want a small, light revolver to carry in my pocket

for when I go fishing or whatever else. I need something to keep the snakes at bay. I'm thinking a .38 would be a good round. The key aspects are that it must be small, light, easy to fit in a pocket without being very noticeable. Cheap would be good also, since it's just going to be a beater gun. Hammerless seems nice because there would be fewer edges to get hung on your pocket.

I found this Taurus that looks promising:

Taurus International Manufacturing Inc

Any other suggestions?

I really like my 342PD. Not so cheap though. Unless you get it used with the backstrap sanded to remove rough edges. I paid $350 for mine.

If it's for snakes get the Shotshell Ultralite Tarus Judge...you don't want to have to be using pinpoint accuracy when a poisonous snake is about to bite you.

Hm. So you can have a snubnose, load in that shot-pellet .22...that would be helpful. Nowhere near as as effective as .410, but still interesting.

I keep hearing BAD things about Berettas Civilian models, I hear they only make good military pistols...any truth to this? I still think their 92FS with a compensator is one of the most bad ass looking guns out their. (Leon: The Professional ftw)

I'm sure that's effective. I'm set on a revolver though. I will also probably use this gun to carry around the streets on occasion and as a car gun.

.410 pistols are way to big to carry comfortably in your pocket. I agree that they are the best thing for fending off snakes, though.

A .357 mag with shot shells is very effective on snakes. I imagine that a .38 would work nearly as well. FWIW, I have killed a LOT of snakes with a .22 revolver and snakeshot. their heads just kinda disappear...

However, you are in Alabama, so you may need to fend off a 30 ft python or Boa constrictor..... In that, case, I'd go with the Judge....

Personally, I don't think there is a better pocket revolver than this little beaut.

Product: Model 638 Revolver

Yeah, that's the same as the taurus but S&W and like 1.1 ounces lighter.

for a beater the Taurus might not be a bad choice, look for the steal ones, not the alloy, stainless would be the better choice, can always bob the hammer if its not already

the Rugers are nice(and built like a tank) but heavy, prolly wont want to pocket carry.

S&W are great, looking at $300-400 for a airwieght J frame

consider what you will be wearing when in the wood, it might make access to a pocket gun difficult

one the best and most versital wheelguns is the S&W 66 snubbie, 357/38 and it will shoot as well as a 4" gun, wieght is more than a J frame size gun(and you wont be pocket carring it) but its one of the best wheelguns ever made and will never go down in value...matter if fact they are getting hard to find, went from $400 to over $500 in just the last year(for a nice used one)

a S&W model 60 in 357 is another option, 5 shot

another great gun is the Ruger Secutity Six, lighter than they new GP's and built like a tank

Because in my experience they are cheaply made with little attention to detail, and the snubbies are woefully inaccurate, even for snubbies.

I'm pretty happy with my S&W Airweight J frame 38sp 5-shot. I found mine used and in excellent condition for $275.

Obviously, I'd rather have a S&W. However, I don't want to spend $500 on a beater gun. The S&W site lists it for near $600.

I understand. If I were getting a carry revolver, I would go in the following order (de gustibus non est disputandum):

S&W
Ruger
Colt
Taurus

That's just personal preference, though.

Since Ruger and Colt don't make what I'm looking for, it's either S&W or Taurus. I'll see what the local shop has to offer this afternoon.

My Ruger Single Six .22 loaded with shot shells is what I use. I kill about 6 snakes a year on my place with it. I use a holster though.

Why bother with a larger gun like a .38? If it's for snakes, the ballistic challenge is so low a rock will do it, so just get a .22 pocket gun and be done with it for $100. Reliability, quality, durability? Who cares? It's not even to meet a threatening animal for crying out loud. Just a snake that you can have a misfire, clear it and then shoot again. Miss 3 times? So what? People are recommending guns that cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a beater snake gun you can fit in a pocket.

thats MSRP, new they can be had new for $350-400, for the 442, 642, etc......

like my 340PD is listed at over $1000, they are $600-ish

I just spaced out(forgot to bid) and missed an old Airweight 37 with finish issues for $175, bob the hammer and the perfect beater gun
