OK, I still got ground squirrels....

and not those running in the 3FE engine, either...

I got many in a live trap but there are quite a few smart ones left. And these are probably going to be smart about making lots of babies too... grrrr....

what's the best bait out there for them dang critters... I used to have good success with mandarines but no longer.

problem is that I have a couple under the house so poison is not advisable (stink issue). And I'm loath to use kill traps unless there would be a good one with instant death, I don't like the prongs in the belly type...

suggestions?

whats the problem with them?

can do what I did.......learn to live with em......they are pretty easy to train to do ammusing things mine now can dance and walk on there back legs......they will follow me all over the yard.......kinda fun little buggers

if they are under the house, you need to figure out where they are getting in, fix that, then live trap the ones under the house and relocate them. If they can get in....so can rats and other criters

I dont think they bread as fast as rats, ours only seem to have one litter a year, or at least I only see 1-2 babies a year from the 10 that live here

they LOVE peanuts, corn and bird seed

an outdoor kitty... one of ours made the transition to part time outdoor cat this year and I've been amazed at the difference. Last year the ground squirrels were everywhere and this year I've seen very few.

If your neighbors are that close, have you considered a high powered air rifle? Just a thought. Plus it provides hours of entertainment.

Must be Rock Squirrels if they are that big.
Good info here.

I had a Black Lab that was an efficient squirrel cruncher.

I now have the oposite problem, neighbors cat(which also sprays all over) is now killing my squirrels(he got 2 this week)...........time to get the old Crossman pump out, just 2 pumps should remind the damn cat to stay away.....if not....I will live trap him and take him back to his owners...

Call the neighbors on both sides while aiming at one with a .22LR out your patio door. After you pull the trigger, ask if they "heard that?" If no, keep firing until you see no more ground squirrels. Sure works good in my development. No flashing red lights yet.

And there are no houses behind me. Just a dike they like to dig holes into.

PQR bait works very well.

They have to eat their body weight in five consecutive days before they die. When they die they do it in thier den.

unfortunately, as mentioned elsewhere, I'd rather not have some squirrels die under the living room floor....
so at least the 'house" ones I need to trap...

Back on subject, what is the quietest verison of the .22 to kill these suckers? I have a .177 Pellet gun, but I'd rather use the .22 Rifle but I want to keep it quiet since I DO live in "City" districts even though we have a rather large back yard, and the .177 Break-Barrel pellet gun sounds like a damn .22 when fired anyway >.<. I just don't wanna goto jail :-D
