Remington 721?

Hey guys,

I want to get your advice and wisdom here.

I'm fairly new to large game hunting (last year was my first year in the field for deer) and am looking for a lighter rifle to schlep around the mountains of SoCal. Last year I hauled my Remington 700P in 308 with a 10x fixed scope around. That SOB is waaay to heavy and big to use as a mountain rifle. Since then I've been looking around for a light weight bolt action in .270. I've looked at Browning a-bolts (I like), Winchester 70 Featherweight (I like, but too $$) and I recently looked at a Remington 721. I'm definitely leaning toward a classic traditional look.

I'm really "feeling" the simple clean look of the 721. Also, it would be great not to worry about scratches and dings. I dont know any of the pitfalls here though. It seems there has to be some drawbacks to buying a rifle thats 60 years old. What do you all think of this rifle? Mounted up with a decent scope should I be able to push the lead to 300-400 yards at MOA+? I can do that with the 700P, but I dont have very much experience with any other rifles. I just want to make sure I dont buy a rifle I'm going to feel compelled to do a bunch of work on to get it where I want it.

Any advice or insight you can share? Thanks!
Brad

Yeah , lugging a 700P w/scope around all day can be a real chore..

I`m not familiar with the 721 models, but a co-worker of mine said he had a 721 (something) many years ago and that he was very, very happy with his

If you already feel comfortable with Remi 700`s, you might look at the 700 VTR. With a 22" triangular barrel it should be quite a bit easier to carry than your PSS . The VTR is a kick a$$ gub, no doubt. A drawback is that they are only available in .204 Ruger , the .22-250 and .223 Remington and the .308 Winchester though

And yes, if you decide that you never want to drag that 700P around with you anymore, I will [i]gladly[i] take it off your hands

I have an old 721 in 30-06 and it's been good to me. I forget exactly what the difference is but it is pretty much the same as a 700 action wise. It was my first bolt gun and I shot and hunted with it with iron sights for years before I put a scope on it. If it is in good shape for a fair price I wouldn't hesitate going that route. I have beat the tar out of mine, refinished the stock a couple of times, and reblued it once. It still shoots as well as the day I got it.

I had a 721 many years ago and sold it to my brother. It was/is the most accurate factory gun I have ever shot. My A-HOLE Bro won't sell it back to me. I would buy another ASAP. I don't think you can go wrong.
