Sitting here in the home office hearing the dogs go bezerk. I'm on the second floor and look out onto a greenbelt that houses copious amount of Rabbits. Coyotes are thick out here , cats and small dogs get "lost" all the time. When 3 large cottontails high tailed it through the yard I knew there was a song dog making his rounds. Walked into my bedroom picked up the kimber and waited. no more than 2 mins went by, when he appeared just along the tree line behind my quail pen at maybe 50-60 feet my first shot took him right the shoulder but a little forward than I would have liked. I made a follow up that was the coup de grace. he's decent sized and has a nice reddish tinge to him. I'll post some pics shortly. They all fall to hardball.

My son shoots 'yotes off our deck at 100 yards w/ 8mm mauser or 303 British open sites. Got one last year running just like you described.

I marched it of at 25yds exactly. my follow up was actually the shoulder shot, the first one was in the gut Im sorry to say, but hey that first one was one handed. the second was quick but spot on

Good shooting....the Kimber is very accurate out of the box!

I shoot the 'yotes behind the house quite often. Browning A-bolt 22.250 long rifle.
That one looks like a little bit of mange starting on his head.

I love the 22-250 round. I just bought a CZ model 527 in 222 because I wanted to start hunting Coyotes this year. I don't have her sighted in yet and the kimber is deadly inside 100ft.

My daughter took her first hog with a .45 acp (several after that too).

But, yeah....Yodel Dogs are normally shot at greater distances and with a rifle. Good job.

Why kill em? I am just curious. I see threads and lots of responses about people taking them out and each probably has their own reason.

Buck, around here they are taking over the country. I wake up many nights with the dogs going nuts and will shine a light and have 5 -6 up close to the house trying to get to the dogs or cat. They are hard on tukeys and if decent are worth $20 to $25 this last year.

They have been in the news quite regularly here in S. Cal. Not only are they eating dogs and cats but now they are going after children. If people didn't shoot them they would be running the world. They get the crap shot out of them year after year and the population continues to grow at a very rapid rate. And yes, the hides do bring in some extra cash on a good year.

I can understand that. They haven't been in the news or problematic in my area and I guess I had thought it might be more for sport or just a hatred of the animal. I can guarantee you that if they presented a danger to my family or pets i'd be sitting there with a wounded animal call waitin for one. I appreciate the responses.

We have a whole pack of them living in the woods behind my house. they have become more bold over the last year. I have small children and in addition to 3 big bird dogs, the kids have their own dog that I have taken a liking to and don't want her to become coyote food.

I haven't really seen one up close so I can't determine the size of one. Are they that deadly to a medium size dog? A small dog I can see. Are they that adept that they can take out a lab or possibly bigger dogs? I just know very little about the species.

The reason I am asking and trying to understand is that some of my assumptions, when reading posts, in hindsight have probably been wrong.

Coyotes are not especially large....but they are quite tenacious.

There are plenty of ranchers around here that have lost pretty good size dogs to them. They don't fight "one on one", rather they will "lure" a farm dog out into a field (chasing one) and then several will attack the dog.

The term around here is being "stretched out".

We keep them "thinned out" around this part of the country.

Anytime I spot one within a hundred yards of my home, and he/she doesn't run immediately upon seeing me or the dogs, it will be shot if it is still there when I get back with the rifle.

They quickly become "bold" if not kept in check.

people think Im making it up when I tell them about coyotes luring dogs into traps like flintknapper describes. Happens all the time, Ive had them try it on my dogs chukar hunting. The yote in the pic went about 40lbs BTW

Buckru, I don't have a hatred for the coyote. Fact of the matter I have more respect for them than an critter out there. They are incredibly smart and cunning. They usually don't make the same mistake twice. I already posted why I shoot them but it is also a sport. I have gone on 3 day hunting trips and made countless stands and not fired a shot, but you can hear them and see them but not enough to get a shot off. Once, I hunted and called from sunup to about 2 pm and never saw a thing. I finally got back to my truck and one shit right at my truck door and pissed on the tire. A little pay back I guess. Thought that was funny. I actually like the damn thing but like shooting them more.

If I hunted them it would be for the sport since I don't have dogs or children nor do I have any farm animals.

That said. They can be a menace to all kinds of things. Deer, rabbits, turkey, any number of small animals. That is fine, that is just nature running its course. But when the population grows faster than the food population can support they put things closer to home in danger.

Around here most coyotes are big enough to kill a medium to large size dog by themselves. Two or three and thats when there is a problem. They circle around and "hamstring" a dog and if the dog can't use its back legs then a fox could kill it. Like wolves they are pack hunters.

I had a small group of Coyotes follow me back to my tent at dusk camping alone. I'd gone for a walk and they must have sniffed around my camp, then came out to find me. As I walked toward them, they stopped yipping. I could not see them. After I went by, they began following me and yipping again. I had the very clear impression that they could tell by sniffing at camp, then sniffing my trail that there was just me (rather obvious, but kinda unnerving to think about). I had my 9mm but did not feel overly threatened - just keenly aware of my aloneness. When I got back to camp, they disappeared. Just curious critters and smart.

A few friends have lost farm dogs to coyotes. Apparently they are so good at luring dogs out that if they have a female in heat in the pack, she will walk around upwind until even the most veteran dog ends up leaving the safety of the porch. Remarkable. I guess it's true that all the years of shooting and poisoning them left only the very smartest ones out there. Now they've dramatically increased in numbers over the last 50 years or so and are all from the smart gene pool....

Hey Doug, where are you in Idaho. My brother moved to Buhl a couple of years ago. This year he shot the biggest and prettiest coyote and bobcat I have ever seen. The muts here in S. Cal don't even compare to the ones he got although he did not shoot near as many as we usually do here.

Last Deer season a coyote busted my father in law while heading out to his stand....that coyote met a 300WinMag.

Never underestimate the wyle coyote.

A couple of years ago on an early morning deer hunt I came across a grizzly seen in the fresh snow. A cow moose was barking and charging around in a small clearing when I showed up.
Over the course of the night coyotes had packed up and "streched out" (thanks for that one Flint) her calf and devoured the whole thing (about the size of a mule deer). From the evidence in the snow the cow had chased and tried to defend her calf the whole time.
When I showed up there was nothing left but a lower leg and the top of it's head.

They don't get hunted around here as much as they used to and I have noticed a definite increase in thier numbers.

And the freaky thing is that what Coyotes were to the U.P. 10 years ago, now we have the wolf.
