Buying an AR-15 thoughts...

With the Yeti all but gone I have two things planned:

Extensive maintenance on the 80 and

Buying an AR15!

Here is what I have been thinking:

I love to shoot tight little groups in paper at ranges out to 300 yards. I like to shoot ground squirrels out to 500 yards. I bought a 22-250 for the longer shots and now want a 300 yard and less gun. I have always been interested in the AR platforms so now is the time to pull the trigger. Lets get this out of the way right away, no open sights for this old man. I am going to get a flat top and mount a scope as simple as that. It is going to be an AR so no blah blah this one blah blah. So....

I like to own quality products and if they are unique all the better. I am surely interested in building my own lower but have a time issue. Also, I have been pricing the parts and the spread is not great enough for me to take the time to build one.

Option 1:

I have looked at a Noveske semi-complete lower, just add an adjustable stock and trigger group for $299. I can find a NM trigger group for @ $120 and stock for $80. Total cost for a cool, unique, lower $500. I can get a DPMS varmint upper delivered for @ $500. Total $1,000 for a unique and theoretically very accurate gun.

Option 2:

Buy a Bushmaster or Rock River 20" Varminter with 2 stage NM trigger for @ $1,000 and be done with it. The BM trigger I felt was very nice. RR has a reputation of being a 1/2" gun out of the box. I can buy it and be shooting this weekend....

Option 3:

Build my own. It seams like I can build my own with a parts kit and A2 stock for @ $300. That is with out a quality trigger. With a good trigger I am looking at $420 - $480, very close to the Noveske price.

Option 4:

Buy a used gun for $800+. Down side is the potential to be buying someone elses reject or beater. Not a pleasent option for me.

So help me spend my money! I want to end up with the Land Cruiser of AR's with the precision of a Ferrari!

All of the "new" rigs that you listed are winners. An AR is an AR unless you want to pour a bunch of money in to one to wring that last 5-10% of performance out of it. Good if you want to get into match shooting, but for punching paper at the local range and putting critters out of their misery, an off the shelf AR with some mild and inexpensive customization will do the trick.

Don't discount the used gubs. Many times you get peeps that sell damn fine gubs cheap, just to get rid of them cuz they're hurting for cash, just like cruisers sometimes. Hit up the local gub shows, pawn shops and gub stores that sell used stuff. If you can't find a good used gub, buy new

Sorry for the repost, but you really need to consider all the options.

If you really want to shoot, then just get a bolt gun. The only reason to buy an AR-anything is to get the satisfaction that goes with owning an ugly black gun. If you really like to shoot, particularly at stuff that doesn't shoot back, just pick up a sweet bolt gun and live happily ever after.

I own a couple bolt guns and have sold off a bunch of them. I have never been thrilled with bolt guns, just too boring. I would rather own a single shot or a semi-auto. Besides I have had a long distance love affair with AR's since I was a wee lad. I am finally able to get what I want.

New, brand spanking new. I got a great deal on ammo, too. $270/1000, not sure how long that's going to last. Here's his info. I'm not sure if he would want his phone number put out there, so I won't do that. He's also got a website: Redneck Armory "AR-15" originally was Armalite, so his are 'RA-15's for Redneck Armory.

RA15 20" HBAR, CHROME
lines, flat top, A2 front side
and hand guards, 6 position
butt stock, custom lower (3 to
choose from), $725; RA15 6.8
SPC, 20" Hbar, all options
same as above, $855. Other
custom calibers available and
some kalishnikov, order your
customs today. Imbel SAL
with century arms, metric receiver
and original bi-pod, 20
round mag, $1000. IMI UZI,
$1000. EOTech 511
holigraphic sight, $380. 223
once sired brass, $90/ thousands;
223 projectile 55 brain,
FMJBT, W/C, $90/ thousands;
308 projectile 175
grain FMJBT, $189/ thousands;
7.62x39 123 grain,
FMJ, steel case $29/ hundred
or $240/ thousands.

Well I decided to get the Bushmaster Predator 20." The reports I have read about it are very positive. Most are seeing 1/2" - 3/4" @ 100yds and some better. Good enough for me.

Now for optics.......

Sorry I'm late to the party. Check this out - http://forum.ih8mud.com/hunting-fish...selection.html

Then ask if it's mil spec type III anodized? Bolt and barrel MP and/or pressure tested? Is the gas key properly staked? Does it have a NATO chamber or something "better"? Does it take a mil spec receiver extension? Barrel made out of mil spec chromoly-vanadium steel or 4140? "Match" trigger that will almost certainly break sooner or later? etc...

Believe it or not, there IS a reason certain brands cost more and are used by people who shoot for a living. Don't misunderstand - A "Brand X" AR-type rifle might be fine for what you want it for, but it is not "as good as" a Colt or an LMT or a Noveske.
