I need a gun safe...............opinions?

What is my best bet for a gun safe? Ideally something for multiple long guns and pistols. Fireproof and maybe some room for other valuables/documents..............depends on cost I suppose.

Good Morning,

What capacity are you looking for. When you have a hard number or if you think you may invest in more guns, then look at models that allow for expansion by removing different shelves.

I would look at Liberty Safes.

Nat,

I got mine at outdoor world. They will wheel and deal.

Called the main warehouse in Soquel and asked what closeouts they had.

The one I got is very nice, delivered to my front door for $1200.

Other than that, you may want to look on Costco.com.

That one is pretty nice and fire safe for $850 delivered.

Plus, there is room for expansion.

It really depends on how big of one you want. I went to two different gun dealers and asked them which make and model was a good one. They both sent me to Home Depot to buy a Sentry safe.

I bought one that has upper and lower strage as well as hold 15 long guns, out the door it was $320.00.

Buy a bigger safe than you think you need. I put my cameras, papers, jewelry, guns, and anything of high value in mine. I have the biggest one I could get through the door. Its a browning medallion from sportsmans wherehouse.

I was wondering about Liberty Safes, I think I know of a store where I could check them out.

That is the plan. I blame Skillet for all of this years acquisitions. Because of him, I need a shotgun for skeet.

first thing needed before deciding is a reality check IMHO.

The "consumer" safe industry has managed to hoodwink completely most people as to what safes can do. They will generate this image that the safes they sell at gun shows etc are massive affairs that are impenetrable. BS! Most are thin sheet metal with a layer of drywall attached that passes for "superior fire protection".

Yes, they will prevent a kid or a crackhead from grabbing a gun and running with it. But if you expect to protect valuable pieces from a determined burglar, most of the "consumer" safes won't do. Just check the fine print on the specs and see how thick the metal is (picture your cruiser quarterpanels) and wonder how long that would withstand a sledgehammer or a cutoff wheel or a torch. Most of the gunsafes are probably not burglary-rated (meaning less than 15 mins to get in or something like that) and I'd bet most would have only a 15 mins or less of real fire rating. Check out the cost for the size of real "fire rated" office safes with moisture release. These have like 3" of special concrete in double walls. A smallish one will be $3000.

/Off soapbox/

Anyways, if all you want is casual lockup for the kids, a $1000 safe from Costco or a gunshow will do. If you have valuable pieces, think several thousand $.
Consider carefully the electronic vs manual lock. Latter is much much more reliable, but for quick access (read emergency), the former is way better. Better a cheap safe than nothing of course (but keep in mind a safe is a thief magnet too).

+1 for the Costco safe. My in-laws just got one...actually went to the local store and they had it on clearance. Started out @ $520, then it still didn't sell out so marked down all the way to $420. I believe it was the Winchester 24 gun safe. Really nice and has lots of room inside.

Also, yes, get the biggest you can fit in your door. You'll find stuff to put in there

Trust me, there are no "determined" thieves in Nat's neighborhood.
Just grab and run clowns. If he buys the Costco safe or some other such item, and bolts it to the floor, he will be fine.

Not like he has some a bunch of Picasso etchings in there.

Check out Gun Safe, and Gun Safes by Sportsman Steel Gun Safe Company

I got my safe from there. They have some added fireproof options there. There are a wide variety of costs on there depending on options.

Mine ended up being about 4500 dollars to the door. Custom to my order. Easy people to deal with.

SOB weighs a little over 1000 lbs though so it took 4 of us to get it in my house. with some of those furniture dollies.

I put it on some of those "easy glides" once we got it upright, and I was surprised that they actually work. I slid it myself into the corner of my room.

I have a OLD (read built in mid to late 60's) Weatherby gun safe and had it on the second floor of the shop at my old house and I went as far as installing chicken wire behind the sheetrock and installing a steel door. We were away from home and my neighbor calls on the cell phone and said my shop was on fire. I got home to a road full of fire trucks and no one fighting the fire as all the ammo/powder/oxy bottles etc. started going off and they pulled back. The fire ended up leveling the shop and everything was pretty much a complete loss. The safe took a trip from the second floor to the first floor and was in the fire for at least 1 hr. There was no fire damage inside the safe but the guns had hit together and dinged stocks etc. The safe was banged up on one corner and paint destroyed but I am still using it today. New coat of enamal and on the first floor now. They need to build them like that now days.

Just FYI

Check out sturdysafe.com, they're not too far from you. Eventually I'm going to end up buying one of their safes. I've also found good deals on craigslist, people are getting rid of them all the time when they move.
