More 10 / 22 Questions...

I have a fairly new 10 / 22. I have probably put no more than 4-500 rounds through it.

Ever since I pulled it out of the box, it seems to have an unusually high number of misfires. Maybe 1 per 10 round clip.

Over the weekend, we examined the shell casings from my gun and another guy's 10 / 22 and the marks on his casings seemed a bit deeper, harder hit.

I have cleaned the gun, etc. Still the same. Any ideas or fixes?

Anyone experienced this?

I have had some problems with my 10-22. Most of the time it was my fault. Too light of trigger job, loose barrel, aftermarket clip(ramline=junk) or just bad ammo.

Ammo is not it... I have used multiple different kinds good rounds with same issues.

Clips are not it, three different kinds including 2 different factory clips.

I have never touched the trigger or the barrel aside from cleaning.

You have pretty much narrowed it down to the hammer, hammer spring, or firing pin. Cant be anything else if you eliminated all that you said

So, replace all that? How involved is that?

Mine missfires depending on the ammo.

I use the "something" creek metal lips clips.

I have been using Remington ammo for the most part. But tried Federal, Winchester, etc. All do the same thing.

I am experiencing the same issue with my new 10/22 , random misfires plus I`m having occasional shell ejection issues too.. I`ve tried several different brands/rounds with the same average failure rate ..

Did you buy them from Wally World? Just wondering because I've seen on other forums where people seem to have more issues with the guns from wal-mart then their local gun shops.

Here's a great 10/22 forum:
RimfireCentral.com - Hobby and Info Source For All Rimfire Caliber Ammo and Firearms
Should help.

Bolt work and the such is pretty easy!

And just for gun talk clarification the 10-22 feeds ammo with a magazine not a clip. A stripper "clip" is used to feed ammo into a magazine. (Smiley dot)

And my 10-22 did the same thing. I tried several brands of ammo until I found a brand that worked consistant.

that is probably just b/c more people buy their 10/22s from walmart..........the higher percentage of walmart sales lead to a seemingly higher percentage of "bad apples"

I have a 10/22 and have put countless thousands of round through it........using the 10 rnd clip and anyone of my 3-25 round Butler Creek Hot Lips magazines. I will have the occasional misfire but I just chalk it up to the ammo and go with it......occasionally I will have a mis-eject but those are even more rare.

I don't clean my .22 nor to I baby it. My trigger needs work but you would too had you been pulled quickly many 1000 times(no sexual innuendo here).

Is the extractor claw on the bolt stuck or jammed? Is it even there? This is a very common 10/22 problem and mine was the same way. You should be able to get an aftermarket extractor or even find the that the factory part is missing and replace it and see if that helps.

I also went back to using factory 10 round "magazines" and that seemed to help. The newer aftermarket "Hot Lips" are supposedly better than the Ramline POS I used to have.

I rarely shoot the 10/22 anymore, .17 caliber rimfires are just so much more accurate I think I am going to pool my 10/22 into a gatling gun kit for jackrabbit spotlighting

the bulk ammo of almost any brand has issues.....Try some CCI mini mags, CCI standard velocity, or federal automatch. The blue box federal is also pretty good for baseline ammo.

Remington bulk (golden bullet 550 round pack at wally world) should be shoved up the anus of the person who created it. I had tons of misfeeds, fail to fires, and fail to ejects when using remington bulk ammo. It's also very dirty compared to other ammo. Accuracy is not consistent with it either (adds to the frustration factor very quickly)...

My .22 rifles all seem to shoot very tight with CCI standard velocity ammo. I picked up a brick of eley match (red box, all same lot #) at a local gun show this weekend. im anxious to see how tightly it groups.

Skillet,

Sounds like your firing pin isn't striking the primer hard enough. I haven't heard of cosmoline being used too much on 10/22s, but that stuff will gum up the works and prevent the firing pin from full mobility in some weapons. I would pull the bolt carrier apart and make sure that no cosmoline or other grease is in there. My $.02.

I will argue with you about the 550 bricks from Wally World. That is all I use and very rarily have any trouble with them. In the past I have used other brands and have about the same jam/misfire/misfeed rate as the Remington bullets.

And when my trigger isn't acting up I can hold very tight groups with the "golden bullet" just as well as the other bullets.

While I was researching your problem I came across this. Ruger 10-22 charger. It comes with bipod. I just ordered one.

As far as ammo goes....I agree with lunyou as well. I buy the 550 bricks all the time and can't remember the last time I had an issue with a jam.

As far as guns go, I only referenced what others had said. I've never personally bought a gun from wal-mart and so therefore, can't say from experience. I must say, I've purchased almost everything else at WalMart and enjoy shopping at the local Superstore.

A buddy of mine has a simialr problem with his 10/22, but it is definitely ammo related. He's a cheap bastard.

a pistol with a bipod? I was thinking that the picture distorted the length and it was a pistol grip long gun.

Mine broke RUGER | 10-22, 10-22 MAGNUM | ITEM#287520A | e-GunParts.com about 15 years ago, ordered replacement from gun parts....typically feeds any ammo without a problem.
