Collectors... Have you seen this?

My uncle is an avid historian/ collector. He showed this auction lot to me, and I am in awe at the collection this man, Bruce Stern, had amassed. What a wonderful thing that they will go to those who will appreciate them.

He referred to this auction house as the Barrett- Jackson of the gun world, and Bruce Stern likened to Ron Pratt.

Not many of these are hunting weapons, but I know that many of you don't limit your enthusiasm to hunting and personal protection weapons. Enjoy!

Andrew

The value of that collection is simply staggering. It would not be possible for one person to ever do it again.

I quit adding it up at $2,000,000.00 I was only about 1/2 way through the list.

My uncle found the listing on gunboards.com. Some of the proceeds of the auction are going to the NRA. I have found little info on him, other than he was a lawyer and was once on the board of the NRA. Some believe the weapons in the auction are those that the NRA museum decided to pass on! Imagine that. Some believe this may be the tip of the iceberg as far as great collections go.... lots of older wealthy collectors are expected to part with their caches when they part. Time will tell......

Extraordinary!
I think my shortlist (of the James Julia list) if I mortgage the house (and win the lottery) would be
#4
#51, and
#382

(#75 would be just thing in black fly season though!!)

#372 has an important story I think - would be nice if it goes to the right person.

Did you get to #500, 501, 502..........I am in awe and I agree with you Dan, mostly because these remarkable hand made guns are being replaced by plastic/stainless utility arms that will never have that kind of value.

literally mind-boggling.

How can any one person get all that if not working full time on the acquisition, being an expert, and being multimillionaire?

where do you store all this stuff?

plus so many full autos, talk about paperwork and expense...

and no mention I saw of import stamps in the beginning at least, so this must be old imports...

wow!

a pity to see it parceled out. There is enough for an entire museum.

it was an early attempt at a semi auto service rifle by the US.
it was a field installed "kit" that turned a 1903markI bolt action rifle, into semi auto rifle.
many 1903's were converted to the markI configuration(the cmp has sold thousands of them). but when the idea was rejected, all most all of the devices themselves were destoryed. they are a VERY rare item.

My niece works for the Rock Island Armory, Rock Island, Illinois. They also do some pretty high-end auctions of collectible firearms.

She was telling me a story at Christmas that there was this little old lady in Iowa that called up saying that she had a collection of guns that her husband had collected and she wanted an honest opinion of their value. Apparently she had several guys wanting to buy the collection for a few thousand dollars and her neighbor told her to get a professional appraisal before selling to anyone.

Rock Island will travel anywhere, anytime and give an appraisal, and if the seller wishes, take their collection to auction where the buyer pays a "buyers premium" on top of the sales price to the auction house, leaving the seller with the total sum. Seems a bit more honest than low balling a collector and then profiting at auction.

So anyway, this guy goes out and sees the collection. Immediately he tells her to not sell to anyone for a few thousand dollars. She says that she's hoping to sell for enough to buy a more reliable car. He tells her that he can probably get $15,000 for the cardboard box that one of the guns still has.

All told, the entire collection sold for $650,000. I suppose that paid for her more reliable car.

If anyone wants one of their full-color catalogs, PM me. Even the ones for past auctions are pretty amazing just to browse through.

Hijack over.

How did it go?

I guess I need to call my uncle about the final tally on this. I have not found any numbers on what this auction took in. Anyone out there heard anything?
