52 grains disapear into bits after exiting the muzzle so I have to shoot at least 55 grain, but have had better success with 62 grain rounds.

Just wondering if you are using the older Unique powder? I came across an article about how they changed it around 2001 to a cleaner burn but with same burn rate. I just made up a batch of 240gr rnfp hardcast with 7.9 grains of the newer Unique and it didn't seem all that dirty. I shot off six rounds through a 629 8 3/8" and they felt good. bullet exited with plenty of speed and force so I dropped the powder level to around 7.4 grains.

That is the old stuff. Gees, that powder must be old! Still looked good the last time used any. I only use it for lead bullet loads in .44 and .30-30, so I don't use much of it.

Pet Loads

Hi all,

Here are some the pet loads that I have used in competition that simulate Match Ammunition.

AR-15 and variants thereof.

Duplicates current SOCOM load in the ME/Central Asia theater.

Mag length 223 with 77 grain SMK can subsitute 77 grain Noslers with 23.0 grains of Varget. Can possibly use Reloader 15, Ramshot Tac, IMR or Hodgons 4064. Start 10 percent below and consult reloading manuals.

I have pulled bullets and reseated better ones with better powder. I have and will use Winchester Small Rifle primers.

45 ACP 4.2 grains Bullseye with Ball ammo close between 750-800 fps. Start at 4.0 if Bullseye has changed. Winchester Large Pistol Primers.

All rifle primers have been Winchester Large Rifle primers.

3006-can use the same powders as the AR-15
LC Match brass if you can find it or Winchester Commercial brass.
In the M1 Garand pitch brass after the 4th firing because the gas guns tear up the brass. I would start at 45.0 grains of Varget, Reloader 15, IMR or Hodgon 4064 with either the Sierra 168, 175 Matchking. You can try to use Noslers if you want.

In bolt guns, with a 1-12" twist barrel. My favorite pet load in my old Pre-War M70 was 52.4 grains of H4350 with a 190 Sierra Matchking. Do not use this load in a M1 or 3006 Gas Gun. This was the Accuracy load in the 4th edition of the Sierra Manual and it this was a good load out to 1000 yd matches.

308 Same load for all rifles and platforms

In gas guns pitch brass after 4 firings.

LC Match brass or LC brass, Winchester or Lapua brass

For the M1A 42.4 grains of IMR 4064 175 SMK in any of the brass 2.800" mag length-this is or was the go to load for 1000 yd service rifle matches at Camp Perry.

800 yds and less use the Sierra 168 grain SMK 41.5 to 42.0 grains IMR 4064, Varget, Reloader 15, Ramshot Tac.

Bolt guns with 1-10, 1-12" twists you can go to a 190 Sierra Matchking bullet 43.0 grains of Varget, Reloader 15.
Distance very good and effective to 1000 yds. Old school Long Range Camp Perry load.

Lapua brass max powder charge is 45.5 grains of Varget with the Sierra 155 grain bullet. FPS is around 2950 give or take.

Always load for accuracy not speed, these powders are not temperature sensitive. Keep all ammo out of direct sunlight, pressures will increase due to increase of temperature. Always consult the most current reloading manual.

Also, stay to name brand powders do not use anything from Accurate Arms. A friend almost killed himself for assuming the powder he used was kosher.

222 Remington Model 788
23 grs Varget
Sisk 55 gr hp Benchrest (yes I know they haven't made them in 40+ years)
Remington cases
.010 from the lands
.24 group at 100 yds

Slow but accurate for me.

My favorite gun is my Abolt 270

56 grains IMR 4831
Nozzler 130gr balistic tip
winchester primer WLR

This combo is more accurate than I am but comfortably 1" groups at 100 yards. I am no sniper but have had more than my fair share of Elk.
