I'm betting a different auction source. But is that really a new unfired 1954? If so, I've got a boner.

It is a CMP collector-grade HRA. I do not know if it was an auction piece.

I was in the south store this past summer, there was a nice rack in the back loaded with collector grade HRAs. I came close to pulling the trigger on it, but picked up several other rifles instead.

Gotta love the CMP!

To a degree I agree. They perform a valuable service. The auction, on the other hand, is a bit of an oxy-moron.

They put the best stuff on the auction (surprise, surprise) and it almost always brings 3 to 4 times what it is worth on the open market. The net result is that unless you are independently wealthy with nothing better to do with your cash you have no hope of ever being able to purchase any of the good stuff....

So what do you do now Dan?

Clean it up and shoot it, or leave everything the way it is and let the grease age some more?

This rifle will remain un-touched, including the grease. It's part of the provenience. There is zero finish wear on the receiver rails, barrel belly, bolt and op-rod. I have only opened the bolt and removed the action from the stock once to photograph it and inspect it for a data sheet. I did wipe the excess grease out of the stock inletting since it is not really all that good for the wood.

It has been very difficult for me to leave it alone as I really want to clean it up to make it prettier. The problem is that would hurt the value and lessen the over-all appeal of the rifle.
