Solvent & Plastic Guns...

Curious about any concerns there may be with cleaning plastic guns with solvents such as Hoppes, or whatever.

I have a little Taurus Millennium with a plasic frame and metal slide.

I used Hoppes and cleaned up the metal and there is bound to be some solvent left in the cracks between the metal and plastic.

Will this hurt or weaken the plastic?

Are there special cleaners to use?

Has this been discussed before? This is my first plastic gun.

EDIT: Yes, I know I left the 'L' out of solvent in the title.

SAA. Our department gunsmiths all said that Hoppes, Break-Free or any even straight thinner will do the trick. The only oiling to be done is less than a drop on the slide rails & that's it.

I had a Sgt. who was one of our dept armorers & smiths (also a former U.S. Army smith) who said hose it off with Break-Free, or drop it into some laquer thinner pull it out shake it off & your good to go. I never tried it since I figured my life depended on my weapons at the time.

#9 is not good on old nickle plated guns, think it can get under(if worn finish) and lift the finish

but for most all others its fine.

if you end up shooting alot, an Ultra Sonic cleaner may be the way to go, but at $400 is not for most.

If you can find this stuff, it's supposed to be safe on plastic. Click here for the link to the product:

What will the ultra sonic cleaner remove? Do you still have to use a brush to get crap out of the barrell?

everything but lead, you still need to clean the barrel and a few other spots.

its not faster as it needs 20-30min in the cleaner, then 10-20 in the lube but you can do other stuff when waiting, I kinda run an assembley line deal when I use the US on more than 1.

Been using Hoppes on my Glock for 17 years, now. I think your gunmaker would have a huge warning label if the normal gub cleaning products were not applicable but it's worth the time to ask just the same.

I figured as much.

I got the gun second hand so there was no literature with it.

Thanks for the input.

Sorry.

Don't know why you cannot correct typos in thread titles.

That is what happens when you are in a hurry to clean your pistola!
