10-22 scope, Which one?

Bought the boy a Ruger 10-22 for Christmas. What are you running for a budget scope that isn't a piece of junk?

For a .22 cal, I'd go with a decent 4X or 6X. I've got an old Weaver 6X with target hairs on my CZ 452. I'd just go to Wally World and pick up a cheap Bushnell. I wouldn't stoop to Tasco or Simmons, they're just too cheap and will fog up within a few years. HTH.

Weaver, Mueler(sp) or Nikon all make good rimfire scopes for $150-ish

I have a pair of Nikon Prostaffs on a pair of 10/22's, they work just great

I have an older (mid 70s) Redfield fixed 4X on mine. It works well. If I hadn't already had that scope, I would probably buy a Burris fixed 4X compact.

Had a BSA red dot on my 10/22, loved it. It worked well for years until I took a spill in a creek with the gun, scope crapped out but the rifle did not. The scope was about $30, I think it would be great for a kid.

BSA makes a dirt cheap scope. Granted not the best, but I have had several and they take abuse. If it is first gun, it needs a first scope that can be upgraded.

Look at these for ideas.

I have this http://cgi.ebay.com/BSA-42MM-RED-DOT...QQcmdZViewItem on my GAMO air rifle for pigeon control at home.

I don't like it when people buy junk scopes for kids. Seems to me that they could put kids off of shooting if the reticle doesn't stay put and shots go mysteriously awry.

You might be better off to let him learn to shoot with the steel sights first. Basic fundimentals go a long way.

Good point. I shot my last deer with a Mini-14 at 85ish yards. I know I can't trust the scope on that rifle, so I used the peep.

I just bought a Simmons Prairie Master 8-32x44 from Natchez Shooters Supply for 72.00 for my Marlin 99m1. I know its not a leupold or mueller, but it will suit my shooting style. I currently have an old 4/x32 on it now. I'll let you know how well it looks when it arrives.

I've been happy with my Center Point Adventure Class

YouTube - Center Point Optics Field Test

Even though I got it for free (won it in a contest), I could see myself actually buying one for my next rifle

I realize it's a month-old post, but...

G'pa bought my son a stainless 10-22 with a natural wood stock. We took it out to an indoor range (rain issues) and shot a couple hundred rounds through it with the open sights.

He's been shooting for a few years via Boy Scouts and various air and spring-powered products.

Afterwards, we headed to the local sporting goods and picked up one of these Bushnell 3-9x32 scopes for a bit over $50. We looked at a larger reticle scope, but we both felt the weight could be an issue, so went for the smaller scope and saved a few $$.

Bushnell 76-2239; 3-9x32

The only scope I've ever had fail on me was the Bushnell 3-9 on my 10/22. The point of impact started moving around on me randomly and I thought it was me or the gun until one day the reticle just completely fell loose. Ruined a complete season of shooting for me, trying to figure out what was wrong. No more Bushnell for me.

I've been planning on the Mueller APV for some time. All the 10/22 interweb geeks love it.

I'm using a Tasco red dot scope right now that I slapped on when the Bushnell broke. Works fine, but is ugly and kind of boring.

From what I have seen they look great on the 10/22's. The accuracy of 22's these days can certainly warrrent purchasing a higher power scope. Would it be a good scope for a young kid? It depends on the kid. Will your child understand the concept and joy of poking small little groups in paper? Will they be shooting more cans etc offhand? IMHO, if you think they will enjoy poking holes in paper then the Mueller would be great. If they are going to be shooting cans offhand and hunting I think a 2-7, or even a 4x, would be the ticket.

I was unsure about going with the Mueller due to the higher magnification. After researching and asking questions I decided to go with it. The selling feature for me was its reputation for repeatability and for the adjustable objective lens, a big plus for shooting closer ranges. Hopefully it will arrive Monday or Tuesday. BTW, I ordered mine from Mizzou Mule Guns for $115 shipped with a sun shade.

why i asked is i have a red dot on my 10/22 and think my youngster would like a real scope for punching paper!! me being the youngster sounds like a good deal for the money cause i would like to get out past red dot range on occasion! Thanks for info , i had been waiting for the Leupolds to come down 4x but that seems not to be going to happen!

i'm really impressed with my 8-32x x 44 simmons prairie master. Its very bright, has AO(so it will focus down to under 25 yards at high magnification) and has held up well with about 1500 rounds through it in the last month. The only downside that some may not like are the large target turrets. I paid about $75.00 from natchez shooters supply. I'm sure its no Leupold, zeiss or weaver, but i havent looked through one of those, so my eyes and brain dont know the difference.... well worth the money i spent on it.
