I have a Zabala 10 guage, side by side. I love it goosin' but thats about it. Why carry the extra barrel? Id rather have my third shot and not just two. I usually rush my first and blow it anyway.

When used correctly, the SxS shotgun is a terrific birdgun. If you miss the target with the first barrel, sporting ethics require that you fire on an DIFFERENT bird with the second barrel.

I agree with Dan, a SxS is the real bird hunter's weapon of choice. Preferably, a 16 gauge gun...
Here are a couple of my side X side guns.. Fox 16 - 5lbs. 15 oz. 28" barrels Lindner made Charles Daly 20 gauge (Damascus barrels) ![]() John Dickson and Son 12 gauge ![]() Harkom 16 - 5-1/2 lbs.

It looks like Circassian.

Yeah, But which type? There a lots of Circassian's (Turkish, English, Persian, etc) Turk and Eng are the most used and popular. Depending on grade and pattern....its easy to get several thousand dollars into just the blank. __________________ Flintknapper: '97 Land Cruiser, Moonglow Pearl Chocolate Lab (Kota), I miss you. According to my understanding and both of the dictionaries I have close by, Circassian walnut is "The light brown irregularly black-veined wood of the English walnut".

I know, but…… http://www.connecticutshotgun.com/index/Fox/Fox2.htm http://www.800shotgun.com/gallery/gu...id=12&mode=pre http://www.800shotgun.com/gallery/gu...id=17&mode=pre http://www.dressels.com/1x1.gif and so forth. There are at least five kinds of Circassian walnuts I am aware of, but the most common and most used are the Turkish and English. No matter, it was just a question. I could probably get the wife to let me get a pipe made out of Circassian, but that’s about it. Does anyone know why my "smilies" have never worked on the forum? I can't add emotion to this thread, and it could save me a headgasket or a radiator. Not trying to be argumentitave Dan, I hope you know. __________________ Flintknapper: '97 Land Cruiser, Moonglow Pearl Chocolate Lab (Kota), I miss you. one other use for SxS:
- buy inexpensive used Stoeger SxS - go home - be amazed at how crude the innards are - be amazed at how nicely it closes - reflect on how nice it would be to have real outside hammers - chop barrels to minimal legal length - take to Cowboy shoot - have fun like John Wayne on the stagecoach - later have a handy and convincing weapon for family protection __________________ '97: 88K, 3xlock, Custom HD roo bar for sale, 285 MT/Rs on steelies, Hanna sliders, 851+1.5"/863/N73/N74E/SD24, ARB bull with M12, Kaymar with duals, Kaymar rack, Slee TC skid, 2m/440, more stuff, loose nut behind the wheel!) Dan,
The parallels get scary. You have a dark green 93 (yours is supercharged and pretty, mine is not), you hunt with brittanys, who I imagine are perfectly trained,(mine is not) and you shoot/own side by sides of distinct value and beauty (mine is not). I don't know what my point is but that's just weird. __________________ 93 FZJ80 Locked OME 2.5" ARB Non-winch "My greatest fear is that when I die, my wife sell all my s--t for what I said I paid for it." |

Sorry to respond late, but I have been in Texas hunting quail.
The Fox is a 'remake' of a standard AE grade ejector gun that I bought in 1990. It was refiles, re-egraveed, stocked in French walnut (thin shell walnut, big-leaf walnut, English, Circassian, etc.) from Teyssier in Paris. Stock work was done by Gary Goudy of Dayton, WA. I have shot this gun at birds for years, and it is my 'go to' bird gun. I love it. As anyone can see I have a weakness for nice SxS shotguns. Nice Drilling! I like some of the high quality German and Austrian guns. __________________ '96 FZJ80, locked, Hanna sliders, ARB bumper, Kaymar rear with spare carrier, 45 gallon Longranger aux fuel tank, OBA, Hella 4000's, OME lift, 285/75/R16 Revos & AutoHome Maggiolina rooftop tent, etc. Custom Cruiser trailer with OverLand tent www.AutoHomeUS.com TLCA Member #14874 |

I have an AyA 16 gauge that my dad gave me. I love to use it on quail and pheasant. Haven't quite got up the gumption to take it chukar hunting. I probably shouldn't but I love shooting it. What is the point of having it if you don't use it, right? Of course, ask me that after the first tumble down a talus slope.

Nice thread! Bought my first SxS , Stevens 301(?) at age twelve, lost in Willamette River at age 21. Next a Savage "Fox", POS, sold soon after. Then two Browning BSS' in twelve and twenty. Both still in possession and used by family members. Final SxS is a Berretta Siver Hawk in 12 gauge. (Wife has one in a 20) This gun fits me so well I can't stand it! Used hard on Idaho quail, chukars and huns. Stock is scarred and cracked and need a new "field grade" made next spring. (Season runs to 31 January!) Does that fellow in Dayton WA build working gun stocks?

I prefer my 2 barrels vertical Dan:
![]() UK Diana grade, Browning 12 ga. B25 Superposed, 30" M F There are only two things that I've found cheaper in England than in the U.S.: Browning, Belgium made B25 shotguns and Barbour clothing. I'm investing heavily in both. Next purchase, custom fitted, B25 20 ga. Browning Superposed
I love the older Browning Supers (RKLT). I have owned a bunch of them in 20 gauge, and still have my 1937 Super that has killed a truck load of ducks. Wife gave me this gun about 25 years ago.
The other O/U I like is my Perazzi MX20 with 30" fixed choke barrels. Like the Superposed, these guns just handle wonderfully and point very well. __________________ '96 FZJ80, locked, Hanna sliders, ARB bumper, Kaymar rear with spare carrier, 45 gallon Longranger aux fuel tank, OBA, Hella 4000's, OME lift, 285/75/R16 Revos & AutoHome Maggiolina rooftop tent, etc. Custom Cruiser trailer with OverLand tent www.AutoHomeUS.com TLCA Member #14874 |
