540 Bull - HIGH FENCE
Kinda sickening, I got this in an email today. Even though it's on a private ranch, it's still an impressive animal.
> >>> THIS IS A 540 CLASS BULL TAKEN IN COLO ON A PRIVATE RANCH HUNT

That's incredible, but I'm with you on the sickening part. I've never been a big fan of private hunting ranches.

I dont know, but those private ranch hunts just kind of take something out of it for me. If it were a wild bull I'd think it would be a little more impressive.
Kinda like shooting someone's cow in a pasture. Right?

Ok, so anyone explain the reasoning for this kind of hunting and paying prices that could take you to Africa for a safari?

You're all saying that if you owned several thousand to a couple hundred thousand acres of prime elk habitat you wouldn't cultivate the existing herd to produce big bulls and take advantage of it and let others take advantage of it - at a price? I call bull (pun intended).
For a bull that size 127k doesn't seem too far off the mark.
For the record, don't think that I'm someone who actually would participate in a hunt like this. I'm not, nor will I ever be in a position to take part in one. I only hunt public lands right now. But I don't begrudge this guy his right to do it.

I can honestly say that IF I ever own 'several thousand to a couple hundred thousand acres of prime elk habitat', I'd have enough money to put in numerous feed plots, but I wouldn't high fence it. Being the guy that I am, I would allow some hunting on my property, mostly by family and friends.

x2 High fence =shooting
Low fence =hunting
Hunting has been turned into a money game. It shouldnt be that way. It has always been the hunt for me first. The kill is second.

Anybody see a wound in any of those pics? I don't see any wound or blood anywhere. Makes me think the thing was tranquilized or something!

Hunting in someones pasture, no matter how big it is, is killing ,not hunting, and yes there is a difference. Just my opinion.

He must not have a cruiser, which results in an extraordinary amount of excess cash.

Makes me think of brothels...except instead of ******* you're shooting and instead of a rash you get a pair of antlers.
It's a huge business here in Texas look down my nose at all of 'em. We have two ranches (family owned, low fenced) in west Texas and don't even use stands. Haven't for years...stalking is the only way to truely HUNT. Ask any Indian.
And I will say this...if we didn't own land I most likely would not hunt large game. Like Christmas and professional sports, it's become too commercialized for me.
That's my .02

The guy in the blue shirt looks familiar to me and I know that if he's who I'm thinking of he spent stupid amounts of money on guided horseback trips for elk each year for at least twenty years without getting the trophy he wanted. First twelve years he never got an animal at all.
If it IS him I could see him getting to the point of buying his trophy at that price or more if that's what it took.
The guy standing holding the rack looks like one of his kids probably looks by now too, so this has me pretty curious.
(Agree with tglaser, btw, and everyone else who thinks this has a bad taste)

I really don't care for high fence hunting. If asked to support it in a vote I would go against it. Too much risk for CWD to spread. Anyone who thinks other wise has thier head in the sand. Now, personal beliefs aside: HOLY FUCK! That thing looks like it was pumped with hormones. A real curiosity for sure!

Did I miss something here?
Where in this accounting did anyone say the property was "High Fenced".
All we are told (via someones email) is that the animal was taken on a "Private" ranch.
Maybe I don't fully understand the meaning of "Private Ranch" out west. In Texas... 95% of all hunting land is "privately" owned. That doesn't make the state of Texas a "game farm". It just means that the "public" doesn't own the land or have access to it.
Does anyone know the REAL story behind this animal?
You guys were pretty quick to make assumptions and call "foul".

CWD spreading could be dependent upon many things. Too, I don't know if this has occurred to you, but if CWD were present in a herd "under" high fence, the fencing would tend to keep it out of the unrestricted herd. In that case... it would be a benefit. Similarly, the reverse would be true.
If you mean that "concentrating" animals increases the risk of CWD being spread....then I would tend to agree. But, the concentration of animals does not happen soley because of fencing. There are many reasons herds of elk or deer will stay in one area, there doesn't need to be a fence. Winter range in some areas will concentrate the animals, as will "feeding" them.
The spread of CWD is not entirely understood since the minimum incubation time to clinical illness is about 16 months. Latest research suggests that it is spread laterally (from animal to animal) by contact with blood or saliva. So, an animal grazing in the same Alfalfa field as another could contract it. Of course we wouldn't know for 16 months ( thus making it hard to say how it is spread).

The subject of the email I got was "540 Bull - HIGH FENCE". I posted it here the same. I'll be the first to admit I don't know the validity of that, the associated cost, nor the approx. score. If it wasn't a high fence, I seriously doubt they could command that kind of a price, if indeed it's true.
Hope that clarifies things for you, flint.
