To play it safe and to save money down the road, I'd just replace from the cat back or down pipe back. I fixed a problem area before only to have something else break off some time after the previously fixed problem.

And yes, Carl had done exhausts before.

As a temporary fix to get you to a complete new exhaust I'd follow the suggestions of getting an elbow to dump the exhaust out from under the truck.

For a permanent solution I'd skip the OEM stuff (pipes are too small and the muffler is a giant rock magnet). Have an exhaust shop bend you up a 2.5 in system with a high flow cat and the muffler of your choice; I like Magnaflow on 2F's but Flowmaster is nice too. Have the tailpipe exit behind the rear tire up close to the bottom of the quarter. Oh, don't let the muffler shop keep the cat; the local junk yard paid me $60 for an FJ62 cat. I'd guess that huge OEM FJ60 cat will put closer to $100 in your pocket.

I was thinkin OEM because I wanted to stay stock and quite.
I have, at times, pondered a nice aftermarket magnaflow etc. exhaust with 2.5 pipe.
I'll bandaid it and think about it some more. I might also give Carl a ring to see what he can do.

The last 60 had an exhaust like I just described. At normal cruise with the windows shut you could not really hear the exhaust at all. If you shifted at redline you might start to hear it but it wasn't obnoxous. That's with a 3 chamber Flowmaster. A 2 chamber muffler will definitely be heard but still not too bad.

The exotic metals are contained in the honeycomb inside the stainless shell. A convertor manufacturer uses our crusher test plant at work to crush foundry slag from the convertor manufactuing process. A small chunk of high grade slag the size of a piece of gravel is worth 5 figures! We crush a couple dozen 55 gal drums of high grade slag for them a couple times a year.
