B'ton Rocks
Doc,
I'm sorry that I haven't replied earlier, but thought I'd throw in my $.02. I've lived in more than 10 states and currently have two homes - one in Bloomington and one on Oahu. I like living in Bloomington (since 1978) better than anyplace I've lived, including Oahu! The only things I don't like about it are the hot days of July/August, but it's just typical midwest, nothing too bad; and the lack of real quality jobs. The university is the biggest employer and doesn't pay great and there is not a lot of industry. Of course you have a leg up as it's a job that may bring you to town.
Count me in on the get together when you come to town. I'll be here the rest of this week and all of next week.
Tim

Wow, that's saying something!
I've lived in OR, TN, MO, IA, and Washington DC... and I thought I lived in a lot of places!
I'm crossing my fingers on the pay... I know what the industry standard is for my level, and that would be about a $20k increase from what I'm currently making (Iowa pays well below standard). So, if they can pay me the industry standard, I'm all over it.
Biggest obstacle I see right now (assuming they like me and want to hire me) is selling the current residence. I am going to plan on carrying my current mortgage for a while, although I hope I don't have to (so all of that has to be in the new budget).
Phone interview tomorrow!

Official Bloomington visit date is Feb 11th. I'm going to try to drive out on the evening of the 8th and see the 'sights' over the weekend before the interview Monday.
So, it would be best for me if I could meet up with you guys either Saturday night or Sunday night someplace. So I can drive home monday after the interview.
You guys work out the details.... I'm up for anything!
I won't be driving the cruiser though, so no wheeling in the wife's VW!

I don't know about Iowa but the property tax situation in Ind right now is a big mess. The good news is that there has been enough bitching that it got their attention in Indy and they are making some serious changes in our favor and hopefully a 1% cap. Now with the cuts, hopefully our kids won't be going to school in tents and being taught by felons.
Don't take it personal if any of you are felons .

Anybody know a good realtor in the bloomington area?
Most of what I've seen that I liked was in Martinsville, Bedford, and Spencer...

Mmmmm, Martins-tucky. So you bringin' your methlab with you, or you gonna build a new one when you get there? Oh yeah, you're gonna need a white sheet with a couple of holes in it!
IMO Doc, stick with Spencer. I don't know anything about Bedford, so I can't say either way. Martinsville just hasn't evovled yet, their still fight'n the Civil War!

O.k. guys. I think we should get together at Upland Brewing Compnay.
Upland Brewing Company
Upland beer is a local brewing company that has great beer and excellent food. Plus, it's downtown where Doc will be staying.
The address is at the bottom of the webpage.
If you have another suggestion, that's fine.
Doc, it's up to you to set the date and time.
Doc, while your here I can take you around the area if you have time.

Saturday evening? What's good for everyone.... 7? 8? I'll probably head out there for dinner and hang out with you guys afterwards- if you guys aren't doing dinner with the family- come on out early!
Ben- all I have is time on Saturday/Sunday. The only thing that is on the plan is there is at least one house I want to see in Spencer, and I'll try to dig up a couple more before I come out there. Other than that, I'm just there to get a 'feel' for the city and do the 2nd interview.

I wish I could Doc.
I am going to be down there next weekend (02/15) but can't swing this weekend, too much going on here at home.
Good luck in your interview!!

I'm buggin' out in a few minutes, so I should be in IN this eve. The invitation is still open for dinner Saturday night- if anyone's schedule opens up, just come one down!
Benji- I'll ring you when I get into town tonight (if it's a decent hour) or tomorrow morning. I have an appt to go see some houses in Spencer in the morning, but the rest of the weekend is wide open.

Hey!!!!! Easy there on us Martintucky folks! We aren't all bad or backwards. Anyway, I was going to chime in with how beautiful the scenery is in my neck of the woods. I have a one mile long drive way that is so steep in the winter that I needed a real rig to get out. So I bought my FJ80. Never got stuck even though no one else could get out or in. Most people that stay at my place think they are in Colorado because of how beautiful the scenery is here. We call them Indiana Mountains. Okay, so you trade a few meth labs for beautiful sights. Can't have it all can ya?

We went looking at houses yesterday morning and *may* have found 'the one'. It's about perfect IMOP.
I'll let you guys know how the interview goes after I get home Mon or Tues.

Doc, we already had this conversation last year--you are supposed to be heading west, not east!!!!!
Good luck with everything. I hope going to IN will be a good decision for you and family.
Best.

Thanks Onur- the area looks really nice.
I'd definately be heading west if the jobs were there. Besides, where else can you buy a 2875 sq foot log home on over 15 acres for under 180?
Now I'm just in the 'waiting game'- I should hear back from them in the next 3-5 days. I hate this part.

Meh, who needs the west -o-, I mean, why would anyone want to be in a rust free arid climate w/ 362 sunny days a year and all that beautiful desert scenery for me to wheel on BLECH!
Good luck Doc! <fingers crossed>
