Tech Day '08

All,

It's time to start planning for our annual Tech Day and next year's schedule. Traditionally we have had Tech Day on the MLK holiday weekend, which would be 1/19/08 this year. So far Mark has expressed some interest in getting his SM420 installed. Anyone else have any mods that need to be done? Carl is also talking about bending up some tube fenders for those that need them so everyone can see how it's done. If the tube fenders happen, than I may be up for flipping my front springs but I can wait if someone else has something to do.

We also need to pull out our calendars and look at what we want to do next year. There's also elections that need to be held. Carl has again graciously offered his shop for the day, and we have some money in the bank for some food and potentially door prizes. TLCA and HC dues are also due at the meeting so that we are all current. Post up your thoughts, and we can get the year started off right!

Clint

Count me in!!
I sent Carl an email right after TFT's regarding some tree protection (Badlands/Orange), so happens that part of this is fender protection, so it would be cool to see his tube bending skills.

19th's good for me.

I'd like to tear into m rear locker on the 80, but I'd rather see a set of tube bumpers happen since Mike, er, uh, um, redesigned mine in Tellico!

Oh and while you guys are at it go ahead and wrap up the SOA and SM420 on my 40, and PM the head gasket and PHH on the 80. Give me a jingle when you're finished!

Actually, don't rely on me for tech day projects since I may have to bail if it snows.

A.J.

The 5th and the 12th are my only Saturdays off in January. The 6th is my only Sunday off. I don't think I will have any money to get the projects I need to do. I would be more than willing to get dirty and drink some beer.

Later,
Chad P.

I work every Saturday. But I will come by after work if it is still going on. I will probably have no project to do, but I love to wrench. I would like to set some plans in motion for events in 08'. I have to ask for days off way in advance, so that will help me be able to attend more Saturday events. I will see ya all on the 19th (I think).

Tony.

I've marked the calender!

As long as the tubing bender will be out I would like to make a roll bar and rails for my bed if there is time. I have some left over tubing from the race car but no way to bend it right now.

I take it that's the Cliffs event. I will be there. I am getting Lockers and Gears at tech day. I can't wait for another trip to the Cliffs with my new upgrades. Heck, I can't wait to wheel anywhere with my new upgrades. Count me in! Tony.

Yes the parts for the SM420 swap are ordered, they should be in this week. I will get some of the preliminary stuff out of the way so we can make the switch much easier. The only thing I havent addressed is the transfer linkage, but Carl said he could make it on the spot.

I also want a set of tube fenders to replace my stock ones, My driving by the brail method has taken its toll on them.

Weather permiting I will try to clean out the garage and be bringing parts I no longer need with me. This will be a first come first served deal, the price is free unless you feel you have to pay something for them, then its up to you. I have fr.drum knuckles and brakes, rear 76 drum brakes, and some elec. parts. I also have a 74 stock roll bar and fr. seats, but post up if interested in these and I'll bring them up, but hate to load them up if no one is interested.

See ya there
Mark

Hey Carl, a couple questions:
Head count of one here!!
Right after TFT's I sent you an email with marked up pics of some tube protection I wanted for my 62, which included the fenders. Would this be part of tech day or would it be another day since it isn't a 40? If it won't fit in No big deal. If it fits into tech day then definately count me in for the materials. Either way, you can definately write up an order for me to be paid on tech day!!
I would be glad to bring a side dish and drinks to compliment the grub. I assume that would be in order?
Start time?
The location is the same as on your website, 8475N 700E Indy?

Put me down for the tube fenders, if you need the money before tech day call me and I can give you a card number, or I'll bring cash on Sat.

As for a head count, Richard said he is planning on coming up, I'm waiting on a call back from John so he is a maybe, and me.

Put me down for tater salad.

Mark

Hey Guys and Gals,

I will be bringing a guest. I want to make sure it is o.k. with you guys before I bring her.

Below is an email Callie sent me a few weeks ago. She is interested in the Hoosier Cruisers for personal and academic reasons.

Hello,

I'm assuming you are the Ben Miller that is part of TLCA in
Indianapolis. If not, I'm sorry to bother you. If so, I'll explain.

My name is Callie Clare and I'm a first year PhD student in Folklore
at IU and have decided my dissertation is going to be on off-road
trucks/communites. I have friends that are part of the TLCA at home
in Kentucky. Through them, I have met people in Minnesota and been
to events there with them. I have also been to the Black Hills
Cruiser Classic in South Dakota the past three years and met several
people from all of the US and Canada. (I don't have my own truck but
it is a goal. Maybe I can get a grant or something... perks of being
a grad student, right? Ha.) I won't be starting fieldwork for awhile
(perhaps a year or more) but I just thought I would contact you and
ask if you would be willing to be a contact person for me when I do
start fieldwork. Because you are also a grad student made you an
easy person for me to target.

Please let me know if you would be willing to help or if you know of
someone else I should contact.

Thank you so much for reading this,
Callie
------------------

She wrote in a reply:

Hey Ben,

Thank you so much for the positive feeback. I am very excited about this project. Feel
free to post my email if you like. In fact, you can even mention my friend Frydaddy from
Kentucky. He assured me he knows some of you Indiana boys. In fact, I have seen a picture
or two of him and his yellow cruiser in your GSMTR photos.

Again thank you so much and any info on events, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Hope the end of the semester is going well. I'm working on finishing a proposal of sorts
for this particular project.

Callie
-----------------------
By the way, she gave me permission to post her emails.

Callie’s research seems pretty cool and I am sure most of you will find it exciting have our off-roading culture documented in an academic dissertation etc. It is also cool that she is interested in Land Cruisers.

Anyway, I thought the best way for her to get to know us was to bring her by the tech-session.

Let me know if this is cool with you guys.

We will bring snacks.

I personally, look forward to this experience.

Cheers,
Ben

I've got a couple of good Frydaddy stories that we can share around a camp fire someday I remember that he made quite an impression on Heidi at GSMTR '06!

Ben, please tell her that we would be glad to have her come and we will definitely try to make her feel welcome. I am looking forward to this weekend to catch up with all of the HC crew, and it looks like we have some more good tech stuff this year that we can all learn from.

Clint
