Jason,
You may consider yourself a hack, but your 40 is a work of art.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Bout time you update this thread.
I gotta start hoarding minitruck parts for my new 4 runner....

That "stock" 5.0 isn't so much,

It has a fairly healthy cam, 69 351 heads (1.94 intake 1.54 exhaust) that have been ported/polished, 3 angle valve job, stainless swirled undercut valves and 1.7 roller tip rockers.

As soon as I get a good deal on an intake and bigger injectors it is going to be stouter

I am a hack, It is a fact I just do not have an eye for detail that others around here do. It is something that I can live with tho. My junk may not be the prettiest bell of the ball but she sure likes it down and dirty

I guess the intake and manifolds threw me. Sounds like a decent budget build. I was running 30lb inj. on my old mustang I told you about b/f. Just remember the more you mod and v8 the lower dependability you will have. Looking good!

Ho wmuch are you wanting to spend on the intake set-up? I have a buddy with a stang he might be parting out. I dont remmeber what set-up he had, it was nice, not my gt-40 tubular, but nice!

As little as possible It is a budget build. But shoudl be reasonably reliable as well.

I was planning on only runing 24 lb injectors. As it is I am basically maxed out on the 19 lbers that I have.

Let me know if he is parting out. I still need a computer and O2 sensor wiring harness.

And the stock manifold has been ported and polished as well.

i have a 3" die for my bender yes. its an exhaust machine mind you.. it dosent bend "mandrel" style bends in thin wall tubing. it leaves the small radius on the inside edge that all exhaust machines leave. to bend exhaust tube "mandrel" style with a constant radius (like a jd2 with roll cage tube) requires a machine that is in the $38,000 range. i wanted one but wasent interested in the payment. the machine i have i bought new and was 5800.00 with the 3" die package. i was having a hard time finding an exhuast shop that could do decent work. found most would charge the price but not deliver the goods. crappy welds, poor routing, poor design, cheap tube/hangers/clamps etc... bring bob on down. the cost of an exhaust system these days would cover the fuel, true it would be the same as doing it there, but this way you would get some wheeling in and do the exhaust EXACTLY how you want it... offer stands, anytime your ready...

dusey/ershim during the summer?? would be a great "test drive" for bobs exhaust

I should have said die. I figured you did not have a mandrel bender, those things are Uberpricy.

I will take you up on that offer, Dusy this summer would be about perfect

single rear locker. I have never done Dusy would sliders be a god investment?

i went through from kaiser to courtright reservoir in my 40 (and i dont recc this combination) on 32's, stock cruiser 2f,4spd,gears,transfer case, open diffs, 2" shackles and 2" body lift, SUA and drum brakes. i had sliders. the shackles and their frame mounts got bent, (con fer shackles mind you, BENT!) lost the transfer case drainplug early in the trail (dragging on rocks spun it out) didnt know that untill after it was home in driveway. damage to driveshafts, axles, frame and sliders limited to heavy granite scrapes/gouges/dents. took a cable once, and a strap once. cleaned granite out of the beads twice (two different tires went flat due to granite between rim and tire) and had to beat one dented rim back straight after denting bead on rocks. bob will be fine with sliders and a locker. now if you want to go UP thompsen grade then that may take awile.. alot of potential for carnage, your 40 would do fine im sure. its kid tested and mother approved. you basically climb about 800ft of altitude in about 3/4 of a mile straight up over tire sized bolders... way cool... going down is hard enough on 32's. ive heard of very capible groups getting hung up for a full day there and ive known others less capible that have walked it. ( 1.5-2hours is considerd a good time going up) it just depends on the sacrificial requirements of the trail gods that day. let me check my schedule on when would be good .................................................. ......................................... yep, ive got summer off... anytime your ready!!!!

chris

edit, plan on a 3 day wheeling trip to do this... you have to haul butt to do it in two and youll miss ALOT of the most beautiful trail youve ever seen....there are some spots that will literally take your breath away..

I think 3" will choke this engine. Dual 2.5" I would consider a min. Especially considering the other mods you have planned. JMHO

single 3", one flowmaster and a short tailpipe on a warmed over 440 (3-angle valve job, ported heads, cam, intake, headers etc) at 5800 rpms only generate 1.5psi of backpressure measured at the collector. a stock sbc, stock manifolds,y-pipe,stock gm pellet cat and a "turbo" muffler, 2.5" from cat to muffler, stock gm tailpipe at 5000rpms only makes 2.25psi in backpressure. 3" exhaust on a 5.0 liter ford is overkill. too much loss of exhaust velocity reduces low valve lift/low rpm scavenging. 2.5 would better, 2.25 would be best for a crawler... (this is not the popular opinion of the masses though) with the nos, and maces foot i would recc 2.5" single. but hey, im an idiot and its his deal... besides getting a 3" dual system under bob would be a task at best..

Ummm, Bob has 5 seats too

gotta get sliders done too apparently...

I was comparing the duals vs single exhaust for this rig. I already have a 40 series flowmaster. I dont want to buy another (did I mention that I am a cheap bastard??). And the comparison between dual 2.5's and the single 3" was not that significant. Course, the program that I was using did nto calculate the friction against the inner tube walls, just the square " of the ID. So I firmly believe that the 3" will be close to equivilant to a dual 2.5" Additionally, The stock mustang with a dual 2.25" exhaust is basically choked off by the stock exhaust manifold/header. the header that I have is odd, I have not figured out which stock 5.0 it is designed for but it LOOKs to be better than the stock header. In the end I will probably go with a spaghetti design 3" collector set (uber cheap through flow tech)

I only want to deal with a single exhaust. More than that and it gets complicated. More than 3" and finding exhaust parts gets complicated.

Besides, my turbocharged, propane powered 2F in the 40 does great with a 3" system. And I won't pull the 5.0 past about 6K so it will be fine

I do have a spare 420 sitting in the garage. It has some rust on the gears but I am positive that won't matter in a wheelin rig.

Besides, I am sick and tired of bashing my shin on it in the garage...

Who needs spare 420's... they never die..
