Gary, one thing to remember, you can "suck" the tires in with normal 17" wheels since they all come with 5" backspace wheels.

The Walker Evans I am running are 4" Backspace.

Got started on the front fenders this week. They will be tube to match the stock fenders. The front bib is mounted to the front fender hoops. I mounted up a set of Grogans 39" Krawlers to make the fender width measurements. The rear is also going to have fenders because the 80 series track is so wide. They are going to match the front in design and will tie into the rear bumper as the front ties into the front bumper.

Since this going to be hard core, was wondering why the fenders are mount in the stock location and not raised for tire clearance?

Or is it hard core slash still going for the true cruiser look you are going for?

Rob

Gary,

What made you decide to go with enlarged fenders making it "funky" instead of doing somthing like sectioning the body down the center and adding the additonal 4" to retain the stock look?

Or you could section it in two places on either side of the seats and add 2" each so that you wouldn't have to worry as much about the dash, windshield and front bib.

Anyway...just curious...no way it is going to be ready for ICBM...is it?

I started to cut the body down the center and section it so evrything would fit, but didn't for many reasons. I thought it out, drew it out, etc. and given the look afterwards, and the overwhelming amount of work, it was just not in the cards. Amongst other issues, the drivetrain tunnel would end up being double the height of the stock one and I want the space. I really like the larger fenders, and keep in mind that this was mocked up with roughly 6" of lift and 39" tires. The width of the fenders looked miniscule with this combo. I want the truck to have the look that Toyota would have given it if they had done this in the first place. I want to be able to run the more hardcore runs that I can't run in my wagons because of body size, but still am not going beat on it so having the fenders almost covering the tires shouldn't be an issue. I also want to be able to drive across country with the AC on to get to the wheeling spots if I want. Maybe it won't be as hardcore as this forum suggests, but as all the trucks/cars I have built, I will go for a kind of a restmod look, not an all out rock climber look. I guess the truck that gives me inspiration is Rob Rutledge's truck. The only thing I am not hot on is the Black plastic rear fender extension. Mine will look similar in design, but will be tubing/sheetmetal and tied into the rest of the armor. I appreciate the comments. Keep them coming.

OK I got it now.............. I think it is definitely hard core and belongs in this section.

I know that no matter how Gary ends up doing it...it will be bad ass.

Gary,

You will have to explain to me what you mean about the drive train hump being enlarged at the meeting this week though...

The body is sitting within 1 inch of the frame now, if I chaneled it over the frame the drivetrain would stick up farther through the floor making the tunnel even larger than it is now. Widening the body would have worked to cover the tires but then the hump in the floor would have been really wide as well as tall. I liked the enlarged fenders better than the wide body anyway.
Gary

Gary-

You are building what I have always thought would be sweet ever since seeing that Retro Cruiser several years ago.

Hats off to you- keep up the good work.

Any recent pics?

They are coming. We are just making slow progress right now. The cage is being mocked up right now, then the rear bumper, then the rear fenders. Pics to follow.

Rear fender shots. Jason fabbed up a rear bumper to attach the rear fenders too also. Very simple with a 2 inch receiver.

Next is building the exhaust system, radiator mounts, mocking up the AC/heater unit, and starting the suspension. I need to but my tires and wheels but not what to buy yet. I need to start thinking about the color. Tan is my first choice.

This part of the truck is being built at a buddies shop called JK Customs. Jason is responsible for Nolens last Kate project. He is very good at tube work and 5 times faster than me. Its coming back to my place this weekend.
