FJ45 rear springs in a FJ40

Heres a email I recieved today, any ideas????

tFrom: "Mark" <cruisermark@shaw.ca>
To: "Rob Lassman" <rclassman@shaw.ca>
Subject: I may have gone too far.
Date: December 17, 2004 10:14 PM

You once told me what was taken to be an 'ideal' wheelbase. Well, with the 45 springs, to short a brake line and the drive shaft not quite in (just by a couple c hairs), I have it all mocked up and have a 96" wheelbase (without the weight of the vehicle so it'll grow a bit), which is 7" longer than before. Rubbing on the bumper might be an issue. It is that far back. Front d/s in the rear. It looks like a lot. I mean really, a lot! What do you think? Could you run it by the guys on mud? I am scared. I might have to just bite the bullet and get a custom shaft. Go to 94 or 95". I gotta go to bed now, don't know about sleep though.....

Mark Joday, maybe you guys can help?

narrowin the rear bumper is common...IMO, easiest to push the front forward 3.5" and the back rearward by 3.5"...EASY reversal of stock packs for that.

I looked at a set of FJ45 rears, and decided it was WAY too much work to install

OK I finally signed up. I mostly want the wheelbase so I can put in a double tcase. I don't think its that much work. I had some bushings machined so I can use stock shackle pins in stock 45 bushings and fabricated some new rear hangers. I do need a longer brake line and might have to extend my air line for my locker. I'll post some pics when I get done. BTW great site, I've been using it for references for a while, just never been on the forum.

I just gotta trim some sheet metal and bleed the brakes and I'll be done. And yup, they are really loooooong. I hope the tires don't hit the bumper. I need to make new front hangers for the rear springs (mine are bent ), so I might move em forward a bit. I can't wait to go drive it, I'm outta here to finish up. I'll update in a couple hours.

45 springs are in. Rides nice on the road but haven't hit speed bumps yet, flexs not bad in the back yard. I don't have a ramp to guage anything though. The tires come up a little short of hitting the rear bumper. Time for a I'm trying to figure out the picture posting.

Looks good from the pics you sent me, only thing slowing you down is those shorty shocks. I was thinking for a bunch more droop you might consider the same shocks Woody runs?

leaf springs don't need shocks

how many springs did you take out of the 45 pack? i'd think at least the two shortest ones.

Bilstein 5125's would be my choice....14.5" stroke, hoop thru the bed to keep them fairly verticle and get good damping. Very pleased with mine...

figger out those damn pics.....might be some helpful hints in the Help section at the bottom of the forum too....

I used 60 series springs in my 40 front and rear, and re drilled the diff centrebolt holes, moving rear diff back 5" aprox, and I swapped the shocks from one side of the xmember to the other.

We ended up with 98" wheelbase, and the 60 springs fitted the 81 on 40 series bushes and eyes, and we reversed the front shackles as well.

We just turned around the rear shackle mount on the chassis.

Mine came off with a grinder, hammer, and a pry bar...

I put some stainless bushings over the stock shackle pins and installed 45 bushings in the springs. I made the packs out of the top 3 leaves from the 45, and the next 4 down were stock 40 springs that had been rearched, leaving out the shortest one. The stock 40 springs have a nice taper on the ends. The shackle hangers stick out past the rear bumper by an 1" or so, which I made out of 2x3 1/4 wall tubing and drilled 1 1/4" holes for the DOM. As for shocks, I know flexing in my back yard isn't the real world, but I measured and they weren't hitting thier limits. They have 10" travel. And don't forget I am SUA. I did have to mount the ubolt plates with the stud sticking forward to run the shocks in front of the axle, which I don't like very much. The top end of the shocks are in the stock location. Figuring pics.

They are a PITA. The top side is actually counter sunk and under a layer of steel. Lots of drilling and hammering and

I removed the image cause it was kind of repetative and I need to post an image elsewhere.

I watched Mark climb a couple rock beds with good ease, only think I noticed his rear was very compressed.

It seemed to run very good, but its only the second time out with the 36s. I am quite happy with the springs, way smoother ride. The flex seems better, I was able to make it through stuff without the locker on and surprised myself. I just need to move the shackle hangers back an inch. Once I loded up and flexed the springs, they sagged out a bit.

I used 60 springs also, WB is stretched to 103". Have not driven it yet, as I am still in the building stage.

Rockcod what did you use for the front spring hangers on the rear springs. It looks like they're tucked up. Pics? And just a little info I picked up from the spring shop, if you flip your springs around, you will get more axle wrap. Looks good!

The front mounts I made and put them outside the frame rails and I used Jonny Joints for the rear mounts. I flipped both sets of springs around and I am going to put in an anti-wrap bar. I will get some photos of the mounts for you.

I am running a T350 and dual mini t-cases (very long combo) to a mini truck axle, so I was forced to move everything back. I still have a hell of an angle at the rear pinion, had a new rear DS made with a cardan joint and aimed the pinion straight at the t-case.

Here are some photos of the mounts.

I still need to gussett the top of the front mount to prevent any flexing, I sleeved the frame rail and through bolted the spring pin.

Hey Rockcod how bout a pic of the front hangers from the rear? How did you compensate for the taper of the frame rails? Those hangers are nice, up out of the way and you can have some arc to the springs without too much lift. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with gardening crap in my shop!

You would be amazed at what I have in my garage. Between the kids and the wife, I barely have enough room for the important stuff, like, the Cruiser, the dirt bikes, a mini chopper, tools, welder, tubing bender..........

This is the only pic I have of the rear springs.

Thanks. I was reffering to the front hangers though. What did you do about the taper of the rails?

What are you talking about? 45 or 60 springs? Heres 45s.
This was my first try, after wheeling though I had to move it back an inch or 2 because the shackle angle was to much. I ended up gusseting it on the bumper. Let me know if you want an updated pic. I will have to take one.
