Cummins 4BT
I know I'm beatin on a dead horse but; I found a 4BT from a generator. Do you see any problems with using this motor in my '40. Things such as the injector pump be different than an normal automotive application.
Thanks |

I heard that the industrial spec ones should not be used for automotive aplications. They aren't built for the abuse of of the road. Plus you probably wouldn't get thinks like a powersteering pump or altenator.
I would just find one out of a p30 van or just call up the diesel depot. With them you get almost everything to put it in. minus clutch and bellhousing. I don't know how much the shipping would be to alaska but for geogia to california it was 400 for me. You might want to call someone like Peak sales. I think the big difference might be the pump but there are probably others. If you can score one easily enough then you might be able to pickup a cheap pump and swap it over. Would be some effort though. On another note I have mine juiced and the thing is a rocket ship but is louder than hell and mileage is down a little but honestly still pretty reasonable. 4BTs are pretty cool

I am still toying with the idea of a 4bt for my 55 I found this info and was considering contacting the guy if I go the 4bt route:
EDITED I got contacted by the person previosly mentioned in this post and he has informed me that they changed the way they are sold and they now sell all their old trucks through: www.dovebid.com so please go here instead of contacting Frito lay dirrectly. thanks E __________________ 1971 FJ-55 stock pig currently under the knife 1992 FJ-80 My Princess 1992 Dodge Stealth RT/TT http://elvinsmith.com Last edited by poseidon; 06-26-06 at 01:09 PM. |

Cool, I got one priced here in Salt Lake City for around $1000. The truck was in good shape but it had loose steering. They have about 6 that "could" be for sale but then another of their newer trucks crapped out and these went back into daily use. The big thing with them is they were gas powered until the late 80s so they usually have less than 100K on the actual engine, 150K reflects total mileage and Frito Lay can give you all of those numbers. But the turbos might be cooked from turning off and on a lot but they are well maintaintained with known history... I am pretty sure mine was frito lay once, it ended up in the hands of a bread company and honestly I didn't even know if it would run (but luckily the price reflected that). Sure enough it runs great, the turbo and everything are in great shape, turbo doesn't leak a drop. I also have it mildely turned up and it's a rocket ship! That still gets pretty good mileage!

BE careful, the one linked to on ebay has what i believe is the older fuel injection system!!!!
IT does not have the VE rotary pump, or the inline pump. I think it has the styandyne (spelling) pump, which would be harder to find, and was never used in a automotive application. also some indust applications have a set operating rpm range, and i hear is not easily variable like is needed for automotive application. the one on ebay, has too much wear on the ID tag, too much paint on the whole engine, etc.... for only 900 hrs. Sounds and looks fishy? __________________ EMAIL ME click on my name, Send email to HI^C TONS FOR SALE <<<CLICK ME "everyone has different experiences and different opinions" My posts "greatly based on my observations and opinions" and "TO EACH HIS OWN" Sig edited to help futher eliminate those who have or get twisted panities. |

I don't believe it's a stanadyne pump; I believe it's a CAV pump (Cummins attempt to stop Bosch monopoly, it failed) but not 100% sure it's a CAV, maybe a Delphi. __________________ 2000 UZJ100 (Wife's car), 265/75/R16 tires. 96 FJ80 stock with Factory Lockers, 235/85/R16 tires. 98 F-650 w/5.9L Cummins, 330HP injectors, ATS manifold w/HX40 & Ebrake, TST #11 plate, Air brakes, 22.5 tires, 26K GVW/46K CGVW Last edited by Animal; 12-23-04 at 01:03 AM. |
