ChuckB - if you're registering in CA you should do some research first. It may be best to start with a donor that is a 93-94 if you need to register it as the 80.

Noted.
Also, just in case it wasn't clear, ideally if I went down this road I would like it registered pre-'76 to avoid emissions if possible. In my dreams, a diesel would be nice in there, but I could live with the 1FZ

Do you guys do your own body and paint work in house?
For me it was a must to learn everything as I had a hard time finding paint shops to do the work.

That looks great on the cage tho.

Nope! Been quiet about it... Just welded in the last patch to the body this morning. It gets final body work this afternoon and should be in primer by tomorrow morning. If all goes as planned I'll have the body in color tomorrow night.

Man....I love this build!!! All these FZJ- builds are so intriguing, only wish I had the time/skills/money and I would have a fleet of them.

Ya, I understand the cost of a paint booth plus the space it takes up. I was lucky enough to have rented a shop with an ajoining paint booth at my disposal.
Cannot wait to see this thing in paint..........................

Mike at Showcase Autobody here in Fredericksburg has taken over paint work for Iron Pig. I leaned on him to put color on the FZJ40.
First pic is a close up of the cage in pewter. Next two are the tub getting primer.

LOL!
Yes. I have it scheduled for Wednesday. In the mean time I need to get the body back to my shop and back on the frame. (I took the pics above right after the clear flashed but before baking) I also need to seam seal the inside and bottom of the body tub, then undercoat the bottom.
Unfortunately, I also need a head gasket. I wasn't planning on it, it was just an unexpected surprise.
Note the crust leaking from the back of the head.

In what seems a typical pattern for 80 HG's the front of the head shows no signs.
Anyone think I should change the factory PHH while I'm in there? Nah, I think I'll just leave it...

Fortunately for me I've had a lot of help with this project. Cam came by the paint shop yesterday (with lunch ) and helped me finish sanding the body before Mike put color on it. I've been sanding on this thing for weeks. My fingers have been reduced to bloody stumps. I'm not sure if I would have finished it without the help. Thanks Cam!
Even more cool is Vince taking a day off from his new baby to replace the head gasket for me today. My daughter is 3 and she cried when I told her I was going to work "again." Instead of disappointing her Vince, Rich and Cam offered to take on the project. This is HUGE, thanks guys. I'll see you this afternoon when I get back from Richmond.

I expect it will weigh as much as a fully outfitted 80. Maybe a little less. (6,000 lbs maybe?) Lightweight trucks are for wiennies. I wheel with 80's, my truck needs enough ass to pull one out in a pinch.
Lance
PS - there were racecars at the paint shop that weighed less (fully assembled) than just the fzj40 body tub...
