steering arm/knuckle beef idea

i was just wondering to help with knuckle stud failure/ loosening problems if you could take your old low steer arms and put them on the bottom of the knuckle housing and then drill or machine a hole through them and then the highsteer arms and tie them together with a grade 8 bolt?

well...i would imagine you could do it if you really wanted to but the strength gained would be minimal and then you will also run into your TRE on the upper arm...the bolt is just going to want to twist. if you are really concerned about steering arm strength then there are a few vendors who sell 6 stud knuckle/arms trail gear has them and 4x4 labs can make the arms for sure and i think he also has the knuckles

i would be a NEW hole- the hole for the bolt would have to be behind the TRE hole, as close to the knuckle as you could get i imagine....i see alot of people with dana axles with a kind of similar modification, one of my bros with a D60 was shearing knuckle studs and constantly having to tighten the bolts up on the trail, even with red locktite on them until he did that mod and he says he hasn't even had to tighten them since after multiple rides

ps. i was just brainstorming, i've already got 6shooters but i wish that i had thought of maybe trying this first

yep, that's pretty close to what i was thinking about, except you tied them together using the existing tre holes and have heims for steering joints which looks awesome, i wonder if that stud would hit leaf springs though? i think you would have to drill a new hole closer to the knuckle if running leafs...... are those fzj80 knuckles?

I think they are. Those pics are from Slee's build-up of the blueberry. I think he was using 80 knuckles on a custom axle. He could tell you the full skinny on it.

Yes they are FZJ80 knuckles.

They dont know for sure if they will work with leafs. Nobody has tried wth their high steer arms yet.

Buy the BlueBerry and put some leafs on it

Its got to Help spread the load on both the top and bottom.. I think its a good idea. they needed it with the FJ80 setup, because they only have 2 studs and an ABS sensor hole for mounting on the upper arm..

Off Topic, But why do people always use Misalignment spacers on their Tie Rod? It will always stay Parallel with the plane of the Axle, so why waste the Time and Money?

yup, mis-alignment spacers are'nt really required. judging by the pics, i'd say in this case the spacers also act as sleeves to reduce the ID of the heim so it'll work properly with the smaller bolt going thru them. it's pretty much the only way to run a bigger heim on the smaller bolt.

not all mis-alignment spacers are set up to act as sleeves as well.

They may be using them as a "safety" Depending on the outside diameter of the shim it could keep the joint from coming completely apart like a very used TRE. Just grasping at straws.
